Ideas for attaching ID tags to dog collar--quickly and easily?

I have a collection of collars for my little and like to swap. Those split-ring things to attach tags drive me NUTS. He’s a little dog, and rings big enough to be easy to use dangle too far down.

Any better ideas to fasten tags to a collar? Thanks.

How about the plates (like a halter plate) that rivet right into the collar?

I used to get “S” clips from the vet when I got the rabies tags, but those would likely have the same issue you are having with the split rings.

suggestion: put the tags on one of those stupid split rings (they make me nuts too…) THEN get some of this chain; run it thru the split ring and around today’s fashion collar and clip. QED. apparently it even comes in colors… But I bet the local hardware store won’t carry colors. Maybe a Michaels craft store…http://www.ballchain.com/key_chains.html

try a boomerang tag. I have them for my dogs, LOVE them! Enough room for all info and easy to swap out (the split ones)

All great ideas, thank you! I actually had some of those boomerang tags on the blankets I sent with a horse down to NC one winter for training. They did stay on!

We got a Rubit clip to hold all our dog’s tags - easy to switch from collar to collar, as it’s like a tiny carabiner clip!

The “Tagnabbit” would probably be just what you’re looking for.

I got a couple just to try and was pleasantly surprised by how perfect they are for swapping tags. They’re very small so using them on a small dog is great. (I’ve got one who’s only a five-pounder).

Another vote for the Rubits  They’ve worked great for my Labs.

Wow, I guess I’m not the only one that has this pet peeve! (no pun intended)

Nice to know there are some useful gadgets out there, thanks to all!

Try Nite Ize S-biners in size #0, they come in plastic or metal and they hold stuff great. Easy to clip and unclip but not so easy they come off.

I don’t love the rubits - they’re cute, but my littlest dog somehow managed to undo hers (luckily in the house).

I use the split rings, but try to find the smallest ones possible - I’ve got several that are 1/2" at best (some stainless, some brass) and those are the ones that work best for the Corgi Horde. Small enough to keep the tags close to the collar, but big enough to hold all those darn tags (name, rabies, county, microchip). And since they don’t have as much room to slide around, they aren’t as jangly around the house.

Best trick I’ve found for getting tags onto the ring (and the ring onto the collar) is to use a staple remover (the hinged kind) to open the rings!

I use the boomarang tags myself, or embroidered collars, but since all you really need is an emergency phone number on your dog, putting one of THESE on the dog (in addition to your other equipment) is an option:

just a light-weight reflective stretchy band with your phone number embroidered on it. Fits nicely under any regular collar.

Ditto a tiny clip… we’ve got one on our border collie mix with her four tags and it’s awesome to be able to remove them every night so she doesn’t jingle, jingle, jingle overnight in our room while we (try to) sleep. She’s tethered at night so she does need the collar - but the removable tags are wonderful.

Why not get a tag for each collar? Tags are cheap. I got a tag for each of my grand-dogs so when they come here for a visit, they put on their tag with our address and phone #.

Slightly off topic but please make tags not jingle…

You can buy rubber dog tag silencers…

The Boomerang tags are the best IMO. You thread the collar through the tag. It is not going to make noise, hook a tooth, or get lost.

I would suggest skipping any kind of “dangly” tag anyway- they fall off. I find tags that fell off dogs in all sorts of weird places, indicating many dogs lose their ID and are running around unprotected. Or they dangle and bang against each other and rapidly become illegible. Or they get caught on things and cause injuries. They just aren’t a good idea.

You can buy nice collars with contact info embroidered on them, or with riveted-on plates with engraved ID, from many places in many different materials and styles. Or attach your own riveted-on plates. Or just do the boomarang slide-on tags.

Yes, those embroidered or riveted ID’s are great BUT you still need your rabies tag and your license tag (and something to hold them).

IMO the rabies tag is just as important and an ID tag for a lost dog. It provides proof that the dog has a current rabies vaccination (in worst-case scenario if the dog has bitten someone while he/she was lost). It also can be used as a means to try and locate the owners if there is no other ID info. on the dog.

So we all still need to secure tags, of some sort, to our dogs collars. Just saying we need both, tags as well as whatever ID you like best. (I personally love the riveted name plates on leather collars!)
