Ideas for costume for horse and rider?

A show I’m doing at the end of the month has a Hunter Masquerade class, which is basically a hunter derby with bonus points awarded for costumes. Any ideas?

I’ve considered Superman or Batman, and I found a Google image search of Little Bo Peep and a sheep which had me dying laughing. Not sure how practical that one is though. I need to be able to jump in it!

Horse is a 15.3 hh chestnut gelding.

Dinosaurs are always a hit and costumes easy to get in kid’s toy stores.

Washable paint is your friend. Paint the horse, costume the rider.

I’ve always wanted to turn my pony into a minion and have my husband be Gru and me as Lucy. I would have my kids dress up as minions as well.

I just need to find somewhere with a good costume class.

Otherwise, I love a good Phantom of the Opera horse costume. So classy and tasteful.

Two years ago I dressed my pony up as a chocolate bar and my kids as Hershey Kisses. Turned out quite cute.

We do it each year, but it’s a pairs class and you’re set to music. Quite an event! We’ve done Cinderella (horses were Prince Charming & Cinderella, girls were wicked step sisters), Rubber Ducky song (horses were rubber duckies, we were in towels), dinosaurs (I saw someone else do this where the riders were archeologists, we did cave girls), walk like an Egyptian, etc.

I’ve done Dino and Pebbles, dragon and dragon rider (I attached wings to the saddle, so my horse spent the majority of the costume class prancing around), racehorse and jockey (costume was 100% legit from a trainer, and horse is 14.2… adorable!), zombie horse and rider, and a group of us did candy in trick or treat bags. I’ve also seen Pony Spiced Latte, Wizard of Oz, Star Wars, and probably the best one… the horse as a pirate ship with the family being pirates (and the 6 month old human being a parrot).

This year I really would love to make my horse a spider, and I’d be Miss Muffet. But I’m leaning more toward Trash Panda, as my barn has a raccoon issue (and it could be hilarious!). Halloween is a big deal at our barn!

Mexican on a donkey.
Rider with serape cape and BIG, colorful mexican hat.
Horse with light grey blanket with donkey tail, straw hat and big ear extensions.

Last year at a show I saw one girl dressed as a fox and a hound. Rider was the fox.
I went as a fairy complete with wings and my horse was a unicorn. Although at the last minute I took off the horn since it was so windy. My horse is white so that helps with the unicorn theme. I had flowers on his breastplate and saddle pad. So he looked more like a carousel horse without the horn.

Use washable paint to paint your horse like a giraffe then you dress as a zoo keeper. Beige breeches and boots will fit in fine - wear a safari-style shirt and cover your helmet so it looks like a pith helmet.

I saw a super fun one of Harry Potter on a griffon - they covered a slinky with feathers and added wings to the horse, and the rider was in a Hogwart’s robe, etc. Great costume, but I wouldn’t want to jump in it!

Another fun one that is to paint a skeleton on a black horse and the rider is some sort of ghoul or witch. Or black dots on a white horse and the rider is a fireman. Hippies, Indians, fairies can all be done fairly easily by painting designs on the horse and not overly elaborate rider costumes.

Have fun, and please post pictures!
