Ideas for keeping the thighs warm

I’m usually not riding in weather below 30 but we do get some nasty windchill. I find that winter breeches with my north face (windproof/waterproof) rain pants work fine. They are just smooth material (no knee patches or anything) but they work just fine. I also wear thick socks, paddock boots, and half chaps. On top I just layer and stay pretty warm. Sometimes a thin hat under my helmet and I suppose I could use a neck gaiter if need be (I’m a skier so I have all kinds of cold weather garb). For good lower priced technical clothing try REI on sale stuff or Sierra Trading Post. Stay warm. Ride on!!!

Have you tried silk long underwear? Super thin, almost like pantyhose. It’s a great insulating layer, keeps me warm without bulk.

Winter silks makes a base layer that goes to the bottom of the knee. Works great with breeches and tall boots or half chaps!!!

Years ago I rode in group lessons at a barn where lessons took place unless the air temperature dropped below 0 degrees F. Temps were often in the 0 to 15 degree zone, and if we went outside to ride, the wind could be brutal.

I really don’t like to be cold, and I get cold easily, so here’s what I wore: insulated paddock boots with thick wool socks and toe warmers; Mountain Horse polar breeches (imagine full-seat snowpants) over polarfleece pants or heavy long underwear; a base top layer, thick polarfleece top and a MH winter jacket; heavy ski gloves with hand warmers; under my helmet a fleecy windproof balaclava that covered my head and most of my face, and ski goggles. Now I’m a wimp and I ride in a heated arena, but at the time I was never chilled when I had on my full arctic riding kit.

About those riding skirts made in Alaska…they sure look great but not at that price~~!

I’ve seen quarter sheets where the front goes over the rider’s legs. My sister gave me one, all wool, but now I can’t find it of course.

But usually, in 20F temps I am fine in regular if a bit thicker (corduroy etc) breeches, unless I hack outside and the footing is so bad we can only walk.
