If I were to create a Hickstead...
That’s easy lol NOT
You start with my Keur KWPN mare, Kebalia.
She is by Ekstein, out of the mare line that produced Hamlet.

I had thought about breeding her to Hamlet a few years ago to see what would happen, but they had never frozen his semen for North America, so that pretty well ended that right there:-).

Anyone have any ideas?, she is 20 in 2012 so only ETs, but it would be fun to try once! AND she is a tank, like her daddy, once again showing how Hickstead was NOT typical physically for his breeding.
I’ll play!

A nice Heartbreaker son, or Heartbreaker himself? That would bring Nimmerdor to the table, Padinus ads Courville also to the mix, and Harley is just awesome (one of my favs)

hmmm…Contendro I? What was the mare like to ride and jump…that would be a critical factor to know. Contendro produces typey and catty, wouldn’t count on him for sheer power though.

Of course.
Tom, all the other pictures I have seen of Ekstein have been a much more hefty horse, was this one taken when he was much younger?
Could you direct me toward those photos? I owned the stallion for the last third of his life and I am unaware of other conformation photos.

I think instead you are extrapolating from your " n of 1" – your mare – and perhaps from statements by another person who never saw the horse.

Out of curiosity, where is Hickstead II standing? I looked on the Zangersheide studbook and cannot find this stallion listed, although I had also read that this is the book he was approved with.
Full brother Hickstead II licensed by Zangerseheide, seven years old jumping with Joep Raijmakersin the Netherlands.

** CSI Bonheiden 2011 placed 5th in the two phase 7 year old class.

We have quite a few fillies with the Nimmerdor Ekstein Ulft combinations. They are spirited which I like.

Pictures of Ekstein I found on the net:

Thanks. I remember the KWPN conformation photo now. And the jumping photo is a favorite of mine.

Heartbreaker semen is just that- heartbreaking:-).
She did have a Heartbreaker son about 8-9 years ago called Waterloo ( whatever year was the W year for KWPN). He is in USA, and I dont know what happened to him after he did the young horse stuff.

The mare only made babies, but she had a few Liberos while in Holland, as well as Voltaires, Celano and I cant remember what else.

Tom, I have only seen 3 Eksteins. I have to say, in my eye, none are/were slight. Of course, every horse has a mother.
But looking at H-II, he doesnt look slight to me either. Maybe we have different versions of “hefty”

Who cares- Ekstein was a great stallion, why else would I be so happy to have a mare by him.
You sure were lucky to have him standing in your yard, Tom.

I know in the Zangersheide stud book full siblings of the same gender share the name. Just add the number to denote birth order. Such as Cassini I, Cassini II and Cassini III
But in KWPN, horses are usually named for their year of birth. Hickstead 1 was called Opel at first.
So H-II was really a planned move to name him that.

Ingrid, thank you.

I responded to your statement about Ekstein because on the internet, in general, and this board, in particular, statements are often taken as fact even when they are wrong. Unchallenged, before we know it Ekstein will have the reputation of being an 18 hand Clydesdale. Don’t worry about it.

Tom

Does Hickstead II have any frozen just curious?

I think Kebalia would be a good choice or one of the mares in Tom’s stable in Ireland.
