I would probably have called it the night I walked into the barn to get her, and the whole time driving there I was pretty sure I was just going to be a kind stranger to hold her head while she died given what bad shape she was in to be having a colic, and she just glared at me over the stall door like “bitch you are LATE.” Right then I knew that chestnut mare energy would get her through 
I was later told she was in what was technically multi organ failure by the book but look at our girl go. She seems rather unconcerned with what anyone thinks about all that. It has been incredible to see how much can be fixed with just basic quality care.

6 weeks of basic care, guys. He seems much more comfortable on his feet with the addition of the prascend, to the point of needing to now be turned around at the gate when he goes out so that no one catches the business end of his bucking and farting morning routine.

Right?!? It is unreal how “easily” these horses blossomed. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not minimizing the heroic efforts of the teams caring for these horses, either. Refeeding starved horses is hard. But oh my gosh all they needed to not end up in their previous state was some food!

I think the condition change of these horses with basic care, food and water, is powerful evidence for court.

I remember a couple of barn owners saying they had a great place they were sending their retirees to Virginia for 300 a month, when I was in CT. I don’t know if it was this place, but it is making me sick to think of it.

Another place in VA just got a bunch of horses confiscated as well- Bay Ridge. Always on fb looking for free leases…. Wtf is wrong with people.

She’s done it before. Also, leasing horses from people and then selling them without permission from the owners.
Makes me so angry that people keep doing this, and keep getting away with it. As a kid I got to ride so many nice horses that were free leased or semi retired at my barn by their absentee owners - now as an owner would be terrified to let my horse leave my immediate control!

We are just giving him time- they’re growing out pretty well and with the prascend he hasn’t shown any abscesses so far. He is seeming more comfortable and not lifting the one to eat. The farrier is keeping the old track really clean and packed with cotton and copper sulfide. I think once it’s grown out I’ll get new X-rays of that foot to see where we are on sole depth and whether it’s a keratoma in there or what.
It’s hard for me to believe it could be as simple as just… not treating a common and treatable disease, or feeding the horse enough to grow decent foot. I’ve never had a horse that had some kind of issue that gnarly that was so easily solved, really, but as my vet pointed out, I’ve also never deprived my horses of care such that basic horsemanship could essentially cure it. Maybe I’m that lucky this go around, but it makes it all the more heinous, to me.

I’ll be interested to hear if there are additional charges- you hear rumors but I’m no legal strategist so I don’t know whether they will wait until the first round is done.
Everyone has now made it to their long term digs, with miss Ruby taking the longest but finally being discharged. I have been halfway looking for someone to share poofy with now that he’s just a regular horse with regular horse needs and not in need of quite the level of care he’s receiving living in the full lap of luxury, but have had a few people express interest and then back out, which is fine. He doesn’t need to go anywhere that isn’t thrilled to have him. His feet are for all purposes fine, he’s thriving on normal feed and a daily prascend, and I think his most challenging management issue is his habit of tearing off bucking and farting at the gate when turned out. Gotta have your wits about you and turn old man to face the gate.
We did skip Upperville because my son is not into riding at the moment, he just wants to love on the horses and take care of them. Poofy doesn’t deserve to have his day disrupted to go to a show with a potentially uncooperative jockey, so maybe next year!
