If you or a friend has a retired horse at Byrd’s Retirement in VA…

Narcissistic personality disorder kinda comes to mind…

It’s part of the sickness of animal hoarding. I don’t think this person is clinically a hoarder, but lots of animal hoarders insist they saved the animals in their care, despite horrific conditions.

I’ve also seen people end up with lots of horses and defend their care with “horses like to be outside/ shouldn’t be over-fed/ over-blanketed” and because there is some truth to it, end up giving substandard care for a long time, flying under the radar.

I’m not sure she really thinks that. If she did wouldn’t her show horses also be on this “metabolic management” program? It sounds more like excuses to me. Thank you for helping the horses get out of there.

I don’t know- after seeing some of the ones on rehab board come out looking lovely and well conditioned I am having a hard time now with that.

She knows what she is doing. Her show horses look fabulous and well turned out.
This is calculated. The real question is how many owners are still paying on horses that have died.

I wondered about that too. How long after the horse dies does the owner get informed and stop paying.

Yes there is a go fund me

Indeed, I’d be interested to know if the owners were billed for farrier, dental, etc care, if it was done, and why those professionals didn’t reach out or alert someone* that the situation was so dire there.

*If in fact they didn’t.

Supposedly, vets did report her and nothing came of it. I don’t know if she had a farrier look at the retired horses. Many places locally, the farm owner will just rasp them every so often. In the photos, their feet look atrocious.

???

I think that’s part of the movement. Back during Giving Tuesday she asked for PayPal donations to be sent directly to her. It’s been documented via screenshots on Facebook and added to the evidence pile…

Reported to the owners, I meant

If she claimed the horses were seen by XYZ professional, were the owners not presented with bills or invoices from those pros, to justify the charges they were supposed to pay?
That seems like it could be a red flag of issues, to be aware of, going forwards.
.

Yes, I’m still trying to figure out how her asking for donations to help support horses who do not belong to the foundation qualifies as a 501c3.
I’m stumped.

From what I remember that income she gets, as donated assistance for board fees paid to her us reportable income. But the money is for someone else’s horses, so… I’m not sure how that works. So if Byrd takes donations that she applied to the bill for boarding Trigger, owned by Roy Rogers… Doesn’t Roy need to claim that assistance on their returns?

I’m not sure what your ??? Refers to.

She is probably just asking what the nature of those comments are because she may not have seen them before.

Any charity has to provide 990 forms to the public (post them publicly) that document certain financial parameters, including the income from donations or other fundraising, expenditures for things like salaries/facilities/supplies/etc. They also need to report who’s on their board of directors (and they can not be all family members, for example), the salaries (if not all are volunteers) of the top five staff members of the org, amount donated versus expenditures on their actual program benefiting their mission, and so on.

Since Byrd’s gained their 501©3 status in 2022, their 990s are not yet available, which is understandable.

Asking for donations to be sent directly to her instead of donating to the organization? If that’s actually what happened (and not that she offered the option of collecting checks made out to the org if a donor didn’t want to donate online), that is an ENORMOUS red flag!!! :triangular_flag_on_post: :triangular_flag_on_post: :triangular_flag_on_post: :triangular_flag_on_post: :triangular_flag_on_post: Glad to hear it’s being documented if such tactics are indeed in play!!!

BTW, good info on any charity can be found at Charity Navigator. Also, you can look up 501©3 charities or find 990s on the IRS site.

Yes. This.

Byrd’s comments about Britney’s incarceration.

When you entered the PayPal address she would list, it was connected to her name, not to the organization’s name. I.E. - when you typed in the email, her name came up as the recipient and not the name of the organization.
