So I am having a new mare vetted and she came back with a IIA biopsy score. I know there are many IIA mares out there but just wondering if there is any reason I should be concerned about this or her report? She has had one pregnancy/foal 2yrs ago that was uneventful.
The vet that phoned with the results is not an equine repro vet so could only give me some vague feedback.
Histopathology
Histologic Diagnosis
Uterus: Mild, multifocal, chronic, lymphoplasmacytic infiltrates
Final Comments
Without knowing the stage in cycle and reproductive history further evaluation is difficult to impossible to determine.
Dr. Don Schlafer DACVP, DACT, DACVM, a professor of Comparative Reproductive Pathology in our Section of Anatomic Pathology was
consulted and in his opinion this mare is a Kenny category 2A. She falls into this category due to the mild fibrosis surrounding the
endometrial glands. The amount of uterine milk is suggestive of early stage fall transition. The lymphoplasmacytic infiltrates are consistent
with mild antigenic stimulation and are not a true endometritis. Based on this category this mare is likely to have a 50-80% chance of
foaling to term.
Description
Uterus: 6 sections, (slide 1): Examined are six sections of moderately hemorrhagic (collection artifact) and edematous endometrial
biopsies. There are mild numbers of lymphocytes and plasma cells within the submucosa. There epithelium and within the superficial
glandular is lined by tall ciliated columnar epithelial cells. The endometrial glands are multifocally mildly to moderately dilated with bright
pink amorphous material (inspissated protein “uterine milk”). Multifocally there are minimal to mild numbers of fibrocytes within the stroma
(nesting fibrosis).
