Illinois?

Hi All,

After getting married and having two babies (the youngest of which is 4 1/2 months old), I am looking to dip a toe back into horses again. I last rode regularly about ten years ago before retiring the horse who was to have been my adult jumper due to chronic soundness problems. Before that, I did the intercollegiate equitation and some local hunter stuff as a junior.

I don’t have any desire to compete anymore, but I would really like to hunt, eventually buying something safe, sensible, and sound (and entirely un-fancy) with which I could hunter regularly. I am horseless, and considering starting back in weekly lessons to knock the rust off sometime soon.

How does a person with no connection to a local hunt (and no horse of her own) find her way into hilltopping once or twice this fall? I am in Naperville, Illinois, and know which hunts are closest. Is it best just to reach out to the hunts directly in the hope that they could connect me with a member who could help? Might there be someone here who hunts in the Chicagoland area with whom I could connect?

Thanks for the help.

ETA: I just ran a search and found an answer (probably should have tried that first). (-: I’d still love a local connection or two, if there are locals on the board!

If you contact the Secretary for a hunt local to you (check the MFHA website to find that info), they may have contacts for someone who has livery horses that you could rent for a hunt or two.

Hopefully someone in your area will respond with some other info.

I wholeheartedly agree with taking lessons to knock the dust off and get back into the swing of things.

Contact Chris Neff at Tipperary.
She is the in house trainer for Don Bar in Wadsworth and they hunt with MillCreek Fox Hounds all season, she herself the whipper-in. She was a favorite of my past trainers. highly recommended, and she has several lesson horses that double as hunt horses, so it’s a perfect combo!

Thanks, everyone!
