I'm in over my head
I don’t know what to do. I recently decided to get back into horses and bought two draft fillies (my first drafts), eight and nine months old. I have no other horses right now. The fillies were sold to me as “halter broke, leads, and ties”. They tie, but don’t lead. I don’t think they were handled at all as younger foals. We are still trying to work on leading, and I am trying to get them to pick their feet up- they have never been trimmed. One filly is all over me. She will be huge, at 14.2 hands and eight months old. I have never had drafts before and I have always raised my standard sized babies to be respectful and lead well. This filly has charged at me twice and literally steps on us when leading. I have tried to make her learn who is boss by putting her in the round pen and trying the “join up” method. No luck. I am getting more and more intimidated. I keep forgetting she is still a foal because of her size. I am afraid she is going to hurt someone if I can’t stop her behaviors. Should I sell her to someone that has more experience with drafts? I had thought about getting a mature mare soon to teach them herd manners, but I wonder if it would help me out. Any suggestions? Sorry for the long post.
If you have the money to try getting a third (!) horse to act essentially as their manners trainer, spend it on a human trainer instead.

You have at least a couple hundred a month for the cause, apparently.

Look up Warwick Schiller Horsemanship. He has a great Facebook page, lots of YouTube videos and a clear, easy to follow training plan which you will be able to use to re-train yourself and your horses. By the time they are old enough to be ridden, you will be ready to back them yourself. Look at the YouTube stuff and then buy the subscription. Even if you only buy one month of it and follow his plan for a month, you will see a difference.

Maybe it looked great going in to the situation? If the seller won’t take them back, then maybe one? I had an untrained mule until I realized that without proper training, there was a good chance of her becoming dog food if I happened to sell her.

I know you see the problem now. If you end up keeping one, get a trainer for you, LOL. I like that one poster said a draft is a lifetime of never letting them forget their manners. Is that want you want?

I knew someone who never had a horse buy a horse and then 8 more! Still clueless. Had to have them.

Where are you located? Maybe someone here can send you in the direction of a good trainer in your area
