Friendly Roslyn
What a lovely set of “get-a-way sticks” Hazel has!
Legs for days. Thank you for sharing your foaling journey with us.
‘get away sticks’ hahahaahahahaha. Good one!
Brenna is in stark-raving-foal-heat today. Standing next to the rails by the geldings…peeing and winking for them. AND when i got the halter out to work-with Hazel, she heard the clink clink of metal and went trotting away, tail flared up, head up and swinging to and fro…waaay to the far end of the corral. And then proceeded to evade me. Teaching young Hazel that this can be done. Grrrrrrr I left and calmed down and came back with carrots and a halter and lead for HER, (success) wrapped her leadrope around his neck (CAUGHTYA!!!) and haltered him up. He fought! (and i won Lol). I unclipped her and let Brenna go back to winking at the boys, and tried a few times to swing the leadrope around Hazel’s butt, but he evaded… He KNOWS that once that’s here, he’s truly lost control. And sure enough, once i had the rope swung around his backside and could lead him by head and ‘push’ by butt at the same time, he led like a good little boy. So…done. Except, they will both wear halters for the next …??? some longish period of time.
Roslyn has to sleep in the barn (so Brenna can’t terrorize them!) So when i move Brenna and Hazel out into the grassy creek turnout and Rizada and Roslyn get to come out into the sun… She runs a little, nurses a little then plops down for a little snooze int he sun. Dead to the world for about 15 minutes.
Because she was not as bold as Hazel, and because her dam is quite a bit less tame than Hazel’s, i’ve held off doing much manipulation with her. But after this morning’s little tussle with Hazel over a halter, i’ve decided that i’ll begin halter training with Roslyn today. Wish me luck!!
She seems curious (as well as sweet) so I bet she’ll do well.
Very flashy baby that!
Don’t know if you can see this picture, we used a light rope as a tail rope on babies, independent of the lead rope, that we ran loosely thru the halter nose piece also:
When you come out one morning and discover that a chunk of his tush has been bitten off, I’m the guilty party.
i get it! and i’ve put teeth on him too… cannot resist! He’s very biteable. Has something to do with his spunkiness i think. Or the curly hide…
numerous gentle attempts … But whenever i picked up the halter and Rizada heard the buckle make ching-ching noises she snorted and they moved away fast. Finally i decided to abandon R+ and just get Roslyn haltered. I’m telling you… it was like fighting a marlin. We had a go-round for a good five minutes…me with a rope swung around her neck and trying to get the halter on … She is going to have it on for a few days. As will Hazel. Now…Hazel is leading like 75% without a butt rope. He learns quickly. I think Roslyn will too. Just back from the barn an hour after our ‘episode’ and both Mom and filly don’t seem to be holding a grudge. Which is great!. And, tomorrow is a brand new day.
Sometimes you gotta do whatcha gotta do! I’ve had to fight a few marlins, thank God they’re small. Once they realize you aren’t going to hurt them and you’re pretty fun, they give it up.
With the exception of one filly. She was mean as the day is long, and she came out of the womb that way.
She reared she pulled back she spun…she squealed!! all of that many times. The squealing Really got to her mom… who didn’t aggress against me, thankfully! I just hung on and tried to get her to back into a corner so i could body-block her in and get that halter strap over her poll and that darn buckle buckled. She is bigger and stronger than Hazel…and i’m glad i didn’t put it off another day (for her to get bigger!).
@eightpondfarm, I’m sure you already know this, but young foals’ necks are very fragile, which is why they are always led/steered from the rear and not the front. It sounds as though putting on that halter may be a two person job, if you can find someone to restrain the foal (hands and arms around the body) while you put it on.
it is done. I effed up, i know that. but it is done. i let her pull back, i let her spin, i maneuvered her so that she butted up into a corner. It took a few tries, once she hit the corner she wrangled away and we had to start all over. But the second time i was prepared and moved on her quickly, determined to not let her get out again…as then i body-blocked her and got the halter on. It really was like fishing working her into a good position… and she also tired more quickly than i did.
Oh, Im pretty sure that 2nd pic contains Baby Stinkeye.
But Done is Done & you seem to have a good sense of when & how to do what
The vid of Hazel reminded me of Stewy Griffin:
Beautiful little girl.
