I'm thinking about starting an UGLY yearling contest

Ok…I’ve YET to see an ugly yearling on this thread. CHICKENS:D

Here is mine…CLUMPS of hair are coming off her…except for her chin hair. That looks like it is going to be there forever and is oh so attractive. But since she is a lovely mover (and not for sale)…I’ll show her ugly pictures:lol:

Ah, yes, a bearded lady… Thank heavens they will grow out of the ugly stage! That beard, though, may be permanent…

Ok now. I don’t think you guys are getting the true gist of this thread.

So far I’m seeing happy, round, hairy youngsters playing in the snow. Nothing like the sort of fugbeast that I’m talking of. You know, where everything is put on all wrong and the hair and mud are just finishing touches.

Stump up some footage of some real eyesores…!

Yeah…mama grew one too but I think my filly is even more talented in the hair growing department. Very glad that I have good clippers:lol: but I didn’t worry about this one getting cold this winter!

OK I am going to play, but not tonite. I will take some pictures that will amaze you. You will say “those are Sugarbrook ponies”. LOL

I found one from a month or two ago, she looks worse now… I might get a recent one so somebody can tell me I’m not the only one!

(excuse the Welsh halter, I was taking pictures a Welsh too, and grabbed this filly for the heck of it)

Here is my colt, he gets the same diet, same deworming schedule, just in a stall in bad weather. HE looks fine!!!

Sugar darling if I didn’t know that was the same filly I’d be convinced you got hoodwinked! Fugly stages is why I never ever buy baby horses. I just do not have the patience or stamina to know they will turn out gorgeous. Hence the 3 days, 3 months 3 years analogy of buying horses. From 3 months to 3 years its all legs, neck, butt high, no back roman nosed and wondering about your sanity in the meantime. I’ve been watching a truly lovely 4y/o arab gelding go through some really awkward stages where he’s got no back, legs all akimbo and his long perfect halter neck either disappears or grows a foot. His head has finally settled into a perfect shape and his ears are where they’re supposed to be but everything else is still in debate.

I can’t take photos of the yearlings. It is too depressing. The pretty girls have been replaced by these hairy-like-animal (from Austin Powers) creatures that are assorted parts of immature horses slapped together into one creature. The black filly is somewhat better than the chestnut but she’s not going to be as tall. :sigh: Someday they will be pretty. Hopefully. I’m expecting the neck fairy to come through any day and take away their necks, too - their heads and necks are still ok looking (if you can get past the hairy faces), so undoubtedly those are next to go. When the necks go, I’ll add a photo or 2.

And as bad as they look we have a 2 year old who is godawfulhomelyicky. I say that knowing that she was stunning as a foal. Her full sister (3 years) has yet to have an awkward day, so hope remains. Someday they will all be gorgeous and only photos will remain to remind us all that they were less than perfect once upon a time.

Kudos to those of you who have posted photos.

I would post photos of my (exceptionally!) ugly duckling, however you have to PROMISE not to laugh… and, someone has to tell me how to post them here~ Although I have been a voyeur on this forum for a while now, I am brand new to posting here…

Mine was worse as a late weanling, not TOO bad now. Still, I wonder where all these horse show worthy yearlings come from. Surely they are a different species.

You know, I’ve had a LOT of yearlings that never had an ugly day. I have one now, in fact, but I think the bigger they are going to be, the more uh… stages… they go through!!

Okay I can now be added to the list, someone please reassure me. My lovely filly, who was born perfect in every way has moved from winter ugly phase to yearling ugly phase. Two days ago I went out for morning feed and she literally shot up over night! The day before she was shorter than our small pony mare, and now she is most definitely butt higher, her legs look too big for her body and she looks like she no longer has a neck!!! Please tell me this is normal for growth spurts, please!

Mine has just gone majorly butt high and gangly again – He’s a year and 5 days today.

At least his neck is pretty! The head shot is my consolation. Love when they lose the baby hair and you get to see the shiny sparkly big horse hair under there.

He is very big and seems to have more awkward stages than the smaller colts I’ve had, but overall I think he’s the better colt, rideagoldenpony. Not too worried – yet. He’s a fabulous mover for the hunters.

Now, I have also been blessed with one of the good-looking ones. Filly born March 22, 2009/photo taken July 16, 2010 (approx 16 months) http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/39103_10150222022555014_599515013_13972769_4119738_n.jpg

Love your buckskin, Mikali – but I also love your chestnut filly. Adorable face! The colt will look pretty sharp in the hunters too when he grows up with all that chrome!

Thanks so much…
but the ‘buckskin’ is actually a bay turning grey… and all that chrome is going to be wasted on the colt  because yep… another grey…

Greys: Chianto, Cora, Capi, Ellamieka, Finnan
Chestnut: Azemieka, Faizemieka
Black: Apolaris

This will be my first year where the expected foal has no chance whatsoever of being a grey (Bay sire x Black dam)

Mikali, I grant that your filly is truly in an ugly stage in that picture — but she still has a cute face! With all that scruffy hair, how can a young lady look good???

Thanks - Faiza is my ‘little’ powerhouse!
