Imaging-when seeking a second review

No holds bar.
If you wanted to send out images for review, who would be your reach to? Anywhere in the US.
This would include advanced imaging. Need someone that is not only capable, but a leader in the field reading CT/MRI results.

Looking forward to the boards feedback.

I use Dr Richardson at New Bolton Center for my consults mainly because that is who my vet recommends. I never had an MRI or a CT done on a horse so don’t know who he would recommend for that.

It depends on what kind of a problem you are looking for. There are vet radiologists who your vet can easily consult. I would look for a specialist at a big vet school who does a lot of work in the particular area of concern.

Thank you Laurie. All feedback is welcome. New Bolton is certainly a quality facility with lots of bells and whistles. No harm in inquiring. I will be doing lots of that. The ability to read CT/MRI with distinct accuracy is required.

I am seeking a second, independent consultation. Preferably with a board certified radiologist…but that’s not specifically a press point.

I’ve sent X-rays to Cornell. Believe I paid $80 and got a written response via mail. This was maybe 7 years ago.

Often surgeons read more equine imaging than radiologists (and more accurately as well), unless you have a radiologist that has special interest in horses (most of them do WAY more small animal). Even R&R has a surgeon that oversees their radiology.

Obviously there are exceptions, like New Bolton, but I would probably send the films someplace that does lots of horses - if it’s a University, you can always ask for multiple specialists to look at the images (ie, surgery AND radiology).

We use Dr. Sarah Puchalski as the radiologist that reads the CTs that the practice I work for performs.

Dr. Sarah Puchalski is very good as is Dr. Natasha Werpy for CT/MRI/NBS/ULS/Rads. Also cannot forget Dr. Norm Rantanen. Not sure if he is still doing outside work or not or if he is retired and only doing a limited schedule.

Rich Redding at NCSU College of Veterinary Medicine, Kent Allen at Virginia Equine Imaging

I would expect to pay a fee for this service.

I second this. I just had an MRI read by a radiologist in Kentucky who was highly recommended. I can look up the name if you need more suggestions.

Without question, I would use Kent Allen at Virginia Equine Imaging. The best of the best.

Yes, I do expect a fee :). I’m prepared to send off for more than one additional review. The cost to do so is not a concern. I only wish to obtain the most accurate information/interpretation possible.
Thank you for the recommendation.

At your convenience, if you don’t mind, I’d be interested in knowing who read the MRI.
I appreciate the suggestion!

Thanks :). Seems like Dr. Allen, by the number of times mentioned here, is worth giving a call. Him and the Dr. Puchalski.
Thank you for the link. I’m terribly sleep deprived and it’s been a long week worrying over my horse.

To all…All suggestions are appreciated. Advanced imaging/radiology is a select sub specialty. As such, I want to ensure the most accurate reading. I’m not unhappy with the information I have nor looking to negate. With diagnostics, interpretation is everything. In this instance it’s prudent for another set of skilled eyes to take a look.

It was Dr. Selberg. The cost was $300.00. You are wise to get a respected 2nd opinion and you are very right about how subjective these things can be. When you’ve completed your quest, I’d be curious as to how it helped or if it did, even if you let me know via PM. Yes, I’m a total “geek” with stuff like this.

I’ve found most surgeons are willing to consult on images if they have the time as a professional courtesy. My last major equine injury, I had my vet email the images to pretty probably a half dozen surgeons as well as a blanket request to the surgical teams at several vet schools. Most all of them responded back to either my vet or me directly, no cost.
