I wonder what you mean with it?? Do you think it shuts down statements by people who declare breeders using carriers as irresponsible and only crazy for money??
I agree with you. I always say Congratulations for testing!! And honestly I don’t even like lists for carriers and lists for clear horses… IMO there should be one list for tested horses in alphabetical order with all the results listed…
thats a cool statement… So being clear means a horse wins the class??? Thats a great idea… I vote for the introduction of a new class at shows!!! every untested horse can enter and every horse will be tested. The clear ones win and the carriers loose… Why not… great way of selecting breeding stock… Who cares whether a horse is nice to ride or sound if its a carrier…
Last time I checked most people do not pick their breeding stock for only only trait.
It is interesting that you are insisting everyone is that shallow. “Who cares if it only has three legs and has been blind since birth, it is not a carrier so it is for us.”
I am simply saying that there is nothing wrong with people celebrating what they feel is a good thing, their horse is not a carrier. It is no different than other breed sales advertisements including that their horse is negative/negative for any of that breed’s inheritable issues.
Interestingly enough, we strarted testing our appy sport horse and knabs around 2014 i think, when the test very firstly became available… I had become aware of the issue being present in a knab foal, and wanted to ensure I was aware of any presence in my lines. As with anything, it can be avoided… I hate the word hysteria… I find it condescending and very unnecessary/
My interpretation has been that the “congratulations” has been for testing the horse, not the result. At least that is what I have seen on the FB group, along with posts expressing “thank you for testing”.
not sure why you need to be so personal against me?? Where did I insist that everyone is that shallow???
I celebrate when my horse gets nice scores in upper level dressage,
I celebrate when my horse gets awarded with a premium by the registry,
I celebrate when x-rays and flexions look good.
For sure I don’t care for the result of WFFS. Yes I would use it to avoid a dead foal… But thats exactly it… Thats what you don’t understand. There is no need to celebrate a clear result… Its not the result which makes a difference for the horse. The result is only important to avoid carrier carrier breedings… and either result will work for a decision which avoids a carrier to carrier breeding…
I agree, thats what I thought as well!!
Clear results allow you to breed your animal to any other animals so it is something to celebrate. No risk of a carrier to carrier breeding if your horse is not a carrier.
We all celebrate what we think is a good thing. I see no reason to look down my nose at others and be insulting if they want to celebrate something that is important to them.
You celebrate “nice scores in upper level dressage”, It is OK for someone else to celebrate they finished their walk trot test and remembered the whole thing and got a reasonable score. Your right to celebrate is no larger than theirs even though their accomplishment is different than yours.
That is interesting! Do you have details about the Knab foal? Was it recognized at the time as WFFS, or did it present with similar issues?
wow… your posts are always something…
Where did I write that only nice scores in upper lever dressage are worthy to be celebrated… Yes I celebrate them right now because we worked hard for them… but that post was talking about me and not about somebody else…
And if I run around and tell everybody how happy I am that my horse is clear for WFFS don’t you think people who got back a carrier result might be unhappy about me celebrating?? And there is a tiny little difference between celebrating for success in dressage (whatever level it might be) or a genetic test result… The dressage result you can influence because you work for it. The test result does not change anything about your horses and you did nothing for it…
And the interesting thing is if people just take them as they are, and work with them, nobody needs to be unhappy.
And I do suspect that some stallion owners are very unhappy about the test results of their stallions. I know of an example where all the results of all the stallions are published except for one. The oldest and most successful one. I think its sad because it shows they cannot really handle the information They think this information might make their amazing successful beautiful Stallion imperfect
I don’t think thats the case but I believe people still have a long way to go until everybody looks at test results in a neutral way…
Are you suggesting that the discussion here and in the WFFS FB group has been measured, thoughtful, and rational?
Unfortunately no . But I was concerned , and note that now, either animal genetics, or, UCD actually mention Knabs in their description on website.
If you celebrate with champagne- where’s my invite? You are one celebratory person
That is also insulting.
It’s like any other discussion on a forum like this. Different levels of expertise, knowledge and experience… talking about something. But no hysteria. You can’t dictate who participates, and what they have to say. You also can’t dictate whether a group follows a line of discussion you think is worthwhile or not. People talk and people speculate. That’s life, but it’s not hysteria.
hys·te·ri·a (həˈstirēə,həˈsterēə) noun – exaggerated or uncontrollable emotion or excitement, especially among a group of people.
No other word so aptly characterizes what happened.
come and you are invited Anytime!!!
why is it insulting?? I agree with you the discussion in this thread was done by posters with different levels of expertise, knowledge and experience. Thats totally normal
And yes there was Hysteria as well as a result of the different levels of expertise, knowledge and experience. Thats also very normal. But I think threads like this are important for education as well.
In the FB groups there are people who changed their mind about many things connected with WFFS after they read for a while and learned new aspects. And I hope that this thread was able to provide a lot of information as well. It has been going on for quite a while now and there are many different opinions represented. So maybe some Hysteria is calming down because it originated of missing information… It is really important to look at WFFS not as something horrible and deadly but just as a new little piece of information about horses used for breeding.
But if a horse embryo carries two WFFS alleles, WFFS is horrible and deadly.
