Importing 2 year old from Canada

I am in the process of buying a young horse from Canada. PPE is coming up. Nice mover, hoping to make him a hunter someday.

I have 3 questions.
What is the safest way to pay for the horse?
Does anyone know of a shipper that could take him to the Alexandria Bay Port of Entry from the Brockville Ontario area? It’s roughly a 30 minute drive. My local shipper can pick him up in NY and bring him down to me.
Does anyone know of a safe place that the transfer from the Canadian shipper to the U.S. shipper can take place?
Thanks so much!

Many people still use wire transfer to purchase.

Far as the rest, you need to talk directly to the shippers and ask them these questions, we cant know what they will or will not do.

Off hand, to me, it would makes more sense to hire a Canadian shipper to get him to a temporary barn where the US shipper can pick him up. Get him a stall there. Not sure a direct van to van transfer involving 2 shipping companies is possible. Certainly be difficult to schedule that, getting pick up/ delivery right on schedule even between 2 vans belonging to the same company is difficult. Most van companies have layover barns to sort loads.

I’m Canadian and we sell a lot to the U.S. A bank to bank wire transfer is the easiest and often has the least headaches.

Try contacting either International Horse Transport or Perry Transport. Both are Canadian companies. Most U.S. transport companies do not want to cross the border as it is more hassle than it’s worth…and there usually are not enough horses travelling State-side to make it worth their while to drive all the way up here. Both of the above mentioned companies have layover barns, etc. and should be able to find a great meetup location with your shipper. They will also be able to walk you through the paperwork and customs broker.

I bought my horse from Canada in 2020. Payment was done via wire. Seller got required paperwork to cross the border from the vet that did the PPE. Ecclestone shipped from Canada to PA and handled everything at the border. It was pretty straightforward.

Thank you all for your help!

At this point I think I might just drive up and get him myself. The quotes for shipping are way more than I expected. I was hoping I could just find a local shipper in Canada to bring him over to NY but that doesn’t seem to be working out.
