Importing from Mexico

Wondering if anyone has imported a horse from Mexico to the states. What transport company did you use? Did they also arrange paper work for quarantine? What was your rough cost? Is piroplasmosis a common issue over there?

Seems less expensive than importing a horse from Europe.

Just curious…is the quality better in Mexico than the US?

My acquaintances in Mexico import from Europe. My ex showed horses to a number of Mexican team riders who were looking in the US.

I think there are probably not more or considerably higher concentration of quality horses in Mexico than in the US, but the top horses there do tend to be more centrally located near larger riding clubs/centers.

I don’t know that you’ll find the prices for top horses or prospects to be significantly cheaper in Mexico than in the US. You might find an older horse for cheaper than you would in the US though.

Piro is prevalent in South America at least.

I sold a horse to Mexico, but have never shopped there. My understanding is that piro is endemic in the west, and less common but not unheard of in other areas. Testing is obviously important.

Thanks all. I agree–doesn’t seem that quality is significantly better there but can be a higher concentration of decent horses in one geography. Prices seem slightly less expensive than the U.S. I hadn’t found any shipping companies that specifically transport out of Mexico and arrange quarantine.

I am from Mexico. I wouldn’t say the quality in warmblood breeds is better than in the US. But for PRE and Lusitano horses the quality is considerably higher. In fact Mexico is the second best breeder of PRE horses and the World Champion at Sicab this year was born here.

I have been involved in Lusitano horses for years now and I think the US is just starting to have some good horses of the breed. Here we have some very good horses for generations already.

And we are in the Dressage forum…but for show jumpers Mexico has one of the most important breeder worldwide, La Silla Stud.

Hi! I would try to contact Cavaletti Equine Logistics. I really don’t know about costs but maybe they can help.
Piro is not common over here, but testing is always important.

Hope this helps!
