I found those the other day and I am not certain that is him, sure looks like him but
without seeing him head on with his bonnet flying up to reveal his distinctive ‘star’ … or being able to ID the rider [and I would not know these people if they bit me]

I am certain of the pics from '07 from Traders Point- the markings match and I found them by plugging his name in the photogs site search [wish more photographers had friendlier website- I am getting cross eyed from looking at teensy weensy pictures of jumpers without even knowing if I am looking at the right class or even the right YEAR!]- that made it easy!

Wasn’t he beautiful? Look at those knees! And how much room he’s giving that oxer! What a horse! And he’s sweet too! If I’d had him he would never have gone anywhere!

I couldn’t agree more. It just seems so odd that he was doing that and then was given up. I would love to know from Tazer if he sound because he could have gone a bit further down the line before giving up. I mean these are the Jr/AOs here, so then there’s the child/adult, child/adult low, and then the level 1s… Quite a few more steps. Either way, Tazer, you are one lucky girl and November Rain is one lucky boy. The stars aligned for you both this month and I hope you get to enjoy many, many, many more years with that incredible horse! I want him

The horses that have placed highly or won at medal finals and come out of a BNT barn are the ones that lease out for mega-bucks. There are many, many horses that get their owners qualified and get their owners/riders around the course at medal finals but don’t even get close to the call-back list. Some get their owners qualified but don’t even get over the first fence at indoors. If you have a horse that gets it’s rider qualified but is pretty much a 40-50K horse, you would not be able to lease him out for anywhere near the amounts you mentioned.

Actually, back then finances did indicate a lifetime retirement for this horse. Not that it is anyone’s business, but the funds bought daughter’s first car, which she still has, leased a former world cup jumper (aged 20 and on his way down - reminds me of Dux) for a season to learn jumpers, bought a prospect with a season at WEF (later sold at a loss - you know how that goes), etc etc. Some has even gone to pay the IRS (yes a lease fee is taxable income). The past two years have gone to pay for board and care on the youngster and on rescuing daughter’s former hunter. And yes, we are in the midwest where you don’t quite get that kind of money. Some years were much less because we were picky about what riders in what barns this horse went to. Twice he went to Harrisburg at no charge to the rider. Like I said, back then finances were not an issue. Now, post divorce, post market crash, they are.

And more - the lady who is giving me the info says:

“There was a great article on the Williams family in the Horse Magazine (i think) a few years ago - i will try and scan it in. I used to play hockey with Deon’s twin sisters - one of them had a freak training accident and damaged her brain stem and had to learn to walk and talk etc again - she is still not physically 100% but she was riding again within a year of the accident and one of the horses who helped her and looked after her was November Rain - he was such a patient horse for her !!”

I know the horse in question very well, dcm let my daughter show him in the IHJA Adult Medal Finals in 2007. Actually at the time he was leased to a barn-mate of ours so both they and dcm gave permission for my daughter to show him in this particular class; she had previously qualified for it but at the time didn’t have a horse to show. Best of all they ended up winning!

He has qualified several different riders for medal finals but none of them were called back (rider fault, not the horse!) which is why they don’t get the mega-bucks to lease him out because he’s not a known name outside of the mid-west and dcm would not let him go too far away. dcm has always been more concerned about the home, rider and trainer that the horse would be going to (close enough so that she and her daughter could check up on him regularly) than trying to maximize the top dollar that she might have received by letting him go far from home. I admire her for that.

But back to the original topic of this thread…I think it is so wonderful that such a lovely horse as Dux has found such a great home.

Precisely. It the exception, not the rule for a horse to sit out in pasture and then come in to prep for the medals in August, and a rare rule at that (so rare I’ve never heard of any case)! In order to command the big $$ a horse has to be well known and in order to be well known he has to be seen often and be seen winning often.

If leasing good eq horses was somehow a profitable venture for more people, I promise you a lot more people would be doing it!

If that is him, that was the very last horse show he was in, and it should have been with Kacey McCann. From what I have been told, he took 2nd on the first day, was sore the 2nd and that was the end of his career.

Based on his USEF show record, he was doing the Grand Prixs with Donald Cheska in 2004. He even got third in a World Cup qualifier. Since Donald Cheska competes internationally, I was wondering if he imported the horse.

Cara and Donald Cheska are assoc. with Tazers horse.
Since Jo Garbarino in the pic above rode at several shows in upstate NY [Patersons, High View, etc] it might be her Nov. Rain assoc with Gary Zook.

The November Rain with Gary was most definitely a large dappled grey - now white, has been owned by the same person for YEARS, did the A/O hunters as well as all the professional divisions. He is happy and retired. Definitely not a horse that would end up on a thread like this. He’s a lifer for sure!!!
