In need of help

Just moved to Florida from California I with my horse after losing a bunch of our stuff in Agoura Hills when the Woolsey fire severely damaged our barn. Is there somewhere that donates tack or has discounts for fire victims? I’d of course provide pictures and previous barn info.

Did you have renter’s or homeowner’s insurance in your old location? It should cover the damage to your stuff, even if it was stored in a location other than your home (assuming it was at the barn).

They wouldn’t cover a lot of my stuff that was lost.

Wendyfisher - I’m guessing you were boarding at a barn that was damaged and it was the BO’s insurance that wouldn’t cover you. Yes/no ? If you had homeowner’s or renter’s insurance there’s a good chance your stuff would be covered. There are a couple of funds that were raised for victims of the Woolsey Fire. If you didn’t lose your home - you may not qualify for those funds. But, you could check it out. I’d check with the LA County Fire Dept and the Supervisor’s office for that district for contact info for those funds. If you did have your own policy - challenge the denial.

And, you might want to look into hurricane coverage now that you’re in FL. We have family there and the last couple of years have been tough on FL.

Agree. It is very very odd that insurance (either your homeowners, or the boarding stable) is not covering your loss. When you said “they wouldn’t cover my loss”, does that mean you submitted a claim and it was denied? Or just your interpretation of your policy?

There is a “Giveaways” board on this forum. If you haven’t already, that’s the best place to put this post, rather than individually on many different boards here.

I second a post in Giveaways - in your case: In search of. And some specifics, what tack, what size, what discipline. I occasionally give stuff away, as I’m whatever the opposite of hoarder is. Hear of people also from time to time.

So very sorry you had to go thru that fire. Where in Florida are you living? (I’m in Florida too) That would be helpful info.

As I said on the other identical thread, there are Facebook equestrian groups out there raising money and donated goods for the California fire victims. Definitely worth checking them all out. I have no idea if there is a means test. I mean, if you could afford to move your horse across the country they might not think you really needed a few dandy brushes donated :). But you never know. I would suggest starting with asking them all.

Well I also got married right after the fire, we used some a good portion of the wedding gift money to move him. Unfortunately, our original venue ( Calamigos Ranch) also was closed down due to the fire and we had to do a last minute venue swap. I’ve already posted on several groups on Facebook.

Stables insurance Wouldn’t cover. Ok thanks!

That’s pretty standard. Just like a landlord’s policy won’t cover a renter’s belongings, your barn’s insurance won’t cover your stuff that was stored there. You would need to check with your own homeowner’s or renter’s policy that you had for your dwelling, not the stable’s insurance.

I agree that the barn owner’s coverage likely wouldn’t cover the boarder’s loss - unless she can show negligence on the part of the owner. The Woolsey fire moved pretty fast. But, if there was an evac notice and there was time to remove property and the owner didn’t act on that in a timely way - maybe. That’s a big maybe.

Congratulations on your marriage. Look for tack sales at yard sales in your area and horse groups that are online. Most folks have tack they’re not using anymore and would likely help a young couple out.

I know it has been said a ton so far but I am going to repeat it - check your own insurance to see if your stuff was covered. The barn owner’s insurance was never going to cover your stuff. Ask your home owner or renters insurance.

Beautifull! I didn’t know there was an equestrian community in that area. Looks like there was a large neighborhood yard sale over the weekend, we’re you able to atrend? Thinking there might have been horse stuff since it’s a horsey neighborhood. Maybe post a notice at the community arena\barn?

The manager evacuated all the horses early and then they pretty much shut alol access to that road down. It was very devastating.

Grrr :(. I didn’t know about that. Right, I keep trying to spread the word.

Your best opportunities will almost certainly be local donations.Have you posted a Wanted ad on the nearest Freecycle group? https://fortlauderdaleonthecheap.com/freecycle-free-stuff-broward/

Which FB pages have you been posting on? Maybe there are some others that folks here would know about.

You could also post in the local to you tack sales group and specify what you are looking for and see if its for sale cheap or for free.

Have you tried Freecycle? There is a Ft Lauderdale group.
