In praise of Beezie!

Man oh man! Is that woman the ultimate competitor or what? She’s always been a favorite of mine, but I was so impressed with her grit this Olympics.

My brother and I were chatting on the phone during the team rounds. Beezie came in as the U.S. anchor. She needed to go clear for the gold, four faults and we’d have a jump off with Canada, more than that and we had the silver. So what would Beezie do? She’d had a rough time in the previous round. She could have very well fallen apart. My brother thought she’d settle for silver. Not Beezie! She rode the horse she had under her at that moment. Not the horse she’d had the day before.

Then came the unfortunate rail. Again, what would she do? Go conservative and maybe have a time fault or two? After all, she did have that rough go earlier, and a silver isn’t all that bad (heck, no U.S. team had yet been on the podium this Olympics), and finishing on four would only put us into a jump off. My brother worried that she’d quit under the pressure. Again, not Beezie! She rode every stride confidently and aggressively. As it turns out, she didn’t need to ride in the jump off, but I’m sure she could have pulled it off it had come to that!

Then came today with the individual medals. Beezie was in a jump off for the bronze. What would she do? Just put in a good round to end the competition or go for being on the podium. There was a case to be made for the former. She’d already won one gold, and this was for the bronze. It was her 6th course. Shutterfly had put in a blistering fast time that couldn’t be beat riding the normal course. Mclain had already tried the “jump the decorations” option, but it didn’t work so well for him.

Again, anyone who thinks she wouldn’t go for it must not know Beezie! How awesome to see her really stretch her limits to go for the bronze. That woman has grit.

I just think she’s awesome! Very inspiring!

She is a true competitor and a true horseman. I believe she and MMB are the best women riders in the world right now, and Beezie is definitely in the top ten, at least in my opinion.

Not only is she humble and hardworking, but as you pointed out, she never gives up. She does what is best for her horse and handles each course with a level head and with the horse beneath her. She is definitely an inspiration to me.

My daughter sees her as the ultimate role model. And I wholeheartedly agree. What a class act and a honor to have her represent our country!!!

Not to disparage Beezie in any way, but IN GENERAL, it seems that the goals of competition (winning) and the goals of doing what is best for the horse do often end up at odds with one another.

That’s why I admire courage, grit, and determination when it’s tempered with being willing to sacrifice one’s personal/competition goals for the sake of one’s horse (as others have said of Beezie). I do NOT admire the “win at all costs” mentality that many people seem to have in our culture, which necessarily puts the horse (and many other things) second.

Ah, Beezie was fantastic!

Not only is she a great rider but she is so cool and calm under pressure.

I know she said in her blog she was getting a little nervous the night before the Ind. but she sure didn’t let it effect her riding.

She gives credit where credit is due, to Authentic and that is really nice to see.

And a little hurrah for Rolf-Gorans silver. Couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy.

great rider and inspiration for next generation. thanks, beezie!

I was so pleased for them! I was annoyed with NBC that they hurried/edited the coverage so much that they didn’t even mention that she won the Bronze! They showed that she had the lead in her jumpoff, but they didn’t show the last rider in that jumpoff.

He is an amazing horse, and definitely that pair is my daughter’s favorite. I’ve been looking for a Beezie/Authentic poster (with them jumping - the arty one USET put out is beautiful but over the head of a 7 year old) for her - maybe now I’ll be able to find one.

I too am a huge Beezie fan! I’ve admired her riding and her horsemanship since seeing her ride at the Rochester International (no longer in existence) in the late 70’s! I have dealt with her and John when trying to sell horses and they have always been helpful and gracious.
Incidently, McLain’s little short-cut over the decorations worked great for him! Had Sapphire not pulled the very last fence, they would have won it all! And the last fence was no where near the short-cut!

Did you guys read her latest blog entry? It was so nice that she gave great kudos to her team and Eric and Rolf. She is a true class act and such a fantastic rider. I really wanted her and McLain to win individual medals because they have been so great for the team, and it was so nice to see her up on the podium.

Congrats to the entire U.S. team and to North American show jumping!

Congratulations to Beezie and the whole team! She is such a competitor and wonderful rider. I am in awe every time I see her ride. Did you hear her when she came out of the ring - “That was so much fun! Didn’t see a distance to the bush!” She cracks me up!

Yup, count me in as another huge Beezie fan.

The distance to the bush thing cracked me up too! I was thinking here she’s been jumping fences at like 5’5" and she’s worried about the distance to a bush? I think Authentic will manage!

She is a true lady. I’ve been watching her riding for years and have always been impressed with how cool she is under pressure and how she is always gracious and thoughtful of everyone on her team from the horse all the way down to the person who mucks his stall. A true class act and someone for us all to look up to for so many reasons.

Me too please

Love Beezie to death! she is the class act in todays SJ! I could watch her all day and night! I really love Judgement but Authentic has been a rock for her!

I loved she and Mclain jumping the bushs. Remember in Athens they jumped the rocks in the jump off for silver.

Too bad Mclain did not at least back off that last jump. I saw the distance coming up bad and was like come Saphhire take care of it but alas she could not! But Sapphire is my favorite of all (well maybe Hickstead is right up there!)

Poltroon can you get a photo of her made into a poster? I have a poster sized photo of Spooner and Robinson that I bought on his website! Just this morning I studied on it and asked Richard when he would be in the Olympics!

Just a note to Siswai-

Beezie graciously gave an interview to the Syracuse newspaper a couple of weeks ago and she mentioned that they were showing Authentic very lightly- not only for his physical well being but also for his mental well being noting that they can get mentally tired as well. I think this speaks volumes about her partnership with her horse.
As a side note, she is very generous with her time in this community (when she is not showing of course)

“The Beeze” is my favourite woman equestrian competitor, hands down! I was thrilled that she won the bronze for the U.S.
