In Praise of Mentors!

As an accidental endurance rider wannabe, I am incredibly grateful to have a mentor who is helping me learn the ropes.

I’ve ridden all my life, competitively in hunter/jumpers and dressage and in recent years, work and life have kept me out of the saddle. A casual conversation at a business dinner introduced me to the sport of endurance and now, 4 months later, we are hopefully conditioning our way up to my first 25 mile ride in June.

In addition to sharing her sport, horses, knowledge, time, passion and expertise with me, she has reminded me how much I enjoy my time in the saddle.

I am in the best shape of my life, enjoying every mile on the trail, learning about the sport and loving every minute.

And here’s a secret. As a Dressage Queen, I might actually be converted to the sport !!

I can only hope someday, I can also pay her gratitude forward.

As I have experienced so far, endurance is a very friendly sport, what are your stories on how you got hooked and about your mentors?

I am looking forward to riding with a mentor at a ride this weekend. Hopefully I won’t drive her crazy.
