IN THE MARKET FOR A NEW (USED) SADDLE TO FIT LARGER HORSES

I ride in a butet currently that is in fairly good condition. I have had it for about 10 years and bought it just a few rides short of it being brand new. While I LOVE the saddle, I know I need one with a bigger seat (need a 17), and would prefer a deep seat, which my saddle doesn’t have. Also, the butet is a regular tree. I ride lots of different horses so may benefit from an adjustable tree. Most of the riding I do is on heftier warmbloods or large thoroughbreds that are built like warmbloods, and the regular tree doesn’t seem to be cutting it. I want the horses to be comfortable.

I need some suggestions on where to look and what brands may be better suited for the larger horses from people’s experience (something comparable to the butet both quality and price-wise). My conundrum is being without a saddle. I cannot afford another saddle without selling the butet first. I am also wondering what my butet may be worth (would expect to get around $2000-2500). Please help! I would love to find a place that would take my saddle in on trade, but trialing the saddle for horse and rider fit is an absolute must.

I love my Marcel Toulouse Annice Pro with the adjustable Genesis tree for my big 17.2 girl. As for selling yours, try ebay.

Why not talk to Beval about their new Artisan saddle

  • get the wide tree & then some good quality (shim) saddle fit pads.
They should have a demo saddle to try & may accept a trade or sell on your Butet.

Thank you! This is exactly what I was hoping for. Beval does take Beval brand trade-ins, which I had no idea. They may take my saddle in trade for a new Beval saddle. The Artisan looks promising. I am sure the quality does not match that of the Butet, but it would be nice to buy something new that will fit the horses so much better!

Someone had an Artisan a while back while waiting for a custom, she did a very nice photoshoot - you should be able to find it easily with the Search Engine - “artisan” & “show posts”

Don’t forget the Butet now offers the option of the FB2 tree, which is cut wider and roomier through the shoulder/wither area to better accommodate warmbloods and larger horses.

We must be on the same wavelength…I just typed almost exactly what you wrote!

Depending on budget, you also might want to take a look at the PJ saddles. They come in wide and have generous wither clearance for large horses.
After trying a ton of different new and used saddles for my moose, the PJ did the trick. Horsie is happy as a clam, though I wish I could have gotten it with a short flap. Oh well.

Great minds think alike.

Based on your budget and what you say you like in a saddle, I think the new PJ’s are a good choice as mentioned above. Really comfy saddles that seem to fit a wide variety of horses, or if anything seem to not be very narrow. They tend to have a deeper seat as well. I rode in one awhile ago while I was saddle shopping, and it was definitely a quality saddle for the price. I think the base model (which is still nice) is about $1900.

I have super comfortable wide tree Herve Godignon saddle for sale. The seat is 17 or 17.5 It’s a beautiful saddle, but since my daughter’s warmblood was injured, we haven’t been able to use it on the TB she is riding now. PM me for pics and details

I have to agree with the people about the PJs as well. They are wonderful and can be custom ordered depending on the one you want.
