Indestructible dog toys?

Galileo bone!!! We bought two, and only took out the second one for use when the foster dog for whom the bone was originally purchased was adopted. We bought it over a year ago, and while it was slowly getting crushed/knawed away at, it is still in very good working condition.
I didn’t think anyone would really want to chew on it because it’s a huge chunk of hard plastic. It makes no noise (except a loud CLUNK whenever it’s dropped, which is the only drawback, lol), it’s not squishy or scented, etc. But for some reason, it’s a favorite toy in this house. I think only the real big chewers will start the bone, but once there are tooth marks on the smooth plastic, the others will pick it up, too.
Rope toys are popular too, but we only get the ones with multiple knots. That way, they just get turned into two smaller toys once chewed through :wink: of course, the rope isn’t nearly as long lasting as the bone and won’t last long with dogs that ‘pick’ but they’re attractive to many types of chewers.
We also rotate toys and don’t have them down all the time (except the Galileo bone). It helps us feel like we’re not throwing away our money :slight_smile:

Dog can shred a stuffed toy in 30 seconds flat (ok, the Tuffie brand might take 10 minutes), has managed to rip apart one of the “super tough” black kongs, and well, can destroy anything. So toys are reserved for interactive play with humans only, they don’t just get left out.
The purple and white Vision Smart balls (sold at Walgreen’s or J&J) seem quite durable, they often last for over a year (usually lost in thickets of thorns rather than destroyed), fit nicely in the Chuck-it, have a nice heft and bounce, float in water, and are, as advertised, very visible to both dogs and people;
we use the Hyperflite Jawz frisbees, they also seem quite durable, often last over a year before they get too punctured.
Lucky dog bumpers are also quite durable if reserved for interactive play only.
The Kong Wubbas are reserved as high-value training rewards, but they don’t last long, if the dog weren’t so deeply in love with them we’d probably not buy more;
None of my dogs have ever shown any interest in Nylabones- I have two that are over ten years old and in perfect condition. Or those antlers- I have one sitting around in perfect condition.

I call them Mr. Squeakys, but they have a real name. Shadow can destroy anything, but we have a Mr. Squeaky that is at least five years old.

Also, the small size Jolly Ball for horses are great.[/QUOTE]

Destroyer (10 month old Rescue Standard Poodle) ripped the squeaker out of this, and then chewed off the feet in a few minutes.

West paw designs are great. Fat Cat are pretty great too.

I forbid rope toys. They had been on the forbidden list forever. My old roommate decided that as a treat, she’d give my dog a rope toy while I was at the Richland Trials 2 years ago. He swallowed the knot and got obstructed. 5k and a week of hell later, it was resolved, but what a miserable week that was.

I have Jack Russells whose desire (and ability) to destroy toys exists in inverse proportion to their size. What I found were the VIP Pet Toys. They are “rated” on a 1-10 scale from gentle chewers to JRP (Jack Russell Proof). The “donut” is a 10 and after two years it still looks new; they have also liked very much the “sea creatures” line and seem to take a good amount of time to destroy the Eel and the small Octopus. Eventually they are able to make inroads on the latter two but that “donut” (forget what its real name is, it looks like a flattened donut and a dog can get a really good tug-grip on it) really has lasted very well.

Well they had these at the store where I went to get dog food today so figured I’d try it… he’s had it 20 minutes and already taken off most of the feet.
Edited: And five minutes later the legs and feet are now totally gone…

We have a 170 pound, Boerboel “puppy” and amazingly he is super gentle with his squeak toys. His Pumpkin Head lasted almost a year and finally just fell apart. Now he has (among about 30 toys) a fake sheepskin toy that squeaks and he has done no damage to it!! He will pop a tennis ball, but doesn’t skin them out like the JRT’s or our BorderJack. His favorite things are dried out cow leg bones (real from the butcher - not smoked) and parts of broken nylon horse halters - preferably with the hardware (snaps, buckles) who knows why!! One indistructible ball I bought was a “Super Foam” ball off e-Bay. It is solid foam - not poppable, and has a hard, but chewable coating. I have two of those and not a tooth mark in them after about 8 months. He has a toy box in the family room and every day he climbs in and chooses a toy to play with. It’s funny to watch him descide on the right one!! I told DH it was better than having him eat the sofa!! He has NEVER touched anything that wasn’t given to him to play with…lucky me!!!

I also have a destroyer terrier. And he LOVES his toys. He also has this uncanny ability to find any new toy we’ve brought home and hidden from him. When we clean up and put all his toys away, he’ll pull every one of them out of the basket immediately, like a spoiled child.

We get the unstuffed toys for him, as he doesn’t like the rubber ones. He still destroys them going straight for the squeaker, but at least I don’t have stuffing all over the place. We use the small squeaker tennis balls for fetch and a rope for tug of war. He’s not allowed to play with the ropes in the family room, as he likes to ‘shake’ them and almost put one through the TV screen. :eek:

Some of them are just tough on toys. Replacing them is part of my ‘pet budget’.

I’ve given up. I buy the Dollar Store/Ace Hardware stuffed toys and let our two labs go to town. They last just as long as the expensive ones, and they only get them on special occasions. I have a shoe box full of squeakers. I’m tempted to get some canvas and sew a crazy squeaker pillow/toy.

The original Cuz toys were much sturdier. The legs used to be solid but now they’re hollow. The first one I bought lasted for months; the next had the feet chewed off in a matter of minutes.

I second nylabones, regular and the extra tough ones, or rope toys with nothing else on it (no tennis balls, plastic handles, etc.). My lab mix shreds everything so I give him cheap stuff to destroy and then take it away before he can eat it. It can get expensive so I usually get stuffed animals at the dollar store or discount dog toys at the pet store.

Rope toys are great for interactive play, but I WOULD NEVER leave my dog alone with one. They are way too likely to cause a blockage if eaten.

Ironically, our destroyer loves to rip apart. but does not swallow. Must be a poodle versus lab thing. Yesterday, he managed to pull my shoulder bag off my desk, go through it, remove my Carmex lip stuff (in the lipstick type tube), chew open the tube, eat the lip balm (yuck!), and leave all of the plastic remnants on the living room floor.

Well the legs/feet were chewed off, but the ball itself is still good 24 hours later so we’ll keep it for now lol. He doesn’t tend to eat the things he shreds… he just chews off pieces and spits them out.
He had a puppy teething nylabone at probably 12 weeks or so… which he took chunks off of… immediately taken away and thrown out as I’ve heard horror stories of those causing blockages and such. But I know they do make the super duper hard ones… maybe one day.
