Indestructible dog toys?

Anything other than kongs? I’ve got a 7 month old black lab who can put a hole and start de-stuffing a stuffed toy in less than 20 minutes. He’s got a kong and I also get the dogs antlers as well (those go pretty quick too to be honest). He only really picks up the kong if it’s got peanut butter in it though. He REALLY enjoys toys but I hate when I get him new ones only to have them torn to shreds in less an hour. I got him an air kong (the ones with the tennis ball like fuzz on them) thinking oh its a kong but it squeaks ::two thumbs up::… he had the fuzz peeled back and the squeaker end pulled out of it in about an hour. We still have the toy but it’s now bald and only makes a whooshing noise lol. I got him one of the dog jolly balls… again 20 minutes later he’s already taken a chunk out the handle… it got taken away and now is only used to play fetch in the yard while I’m watching lol. Today I got him one of those fire hose material toys since it’s supposedly super: http://www.alphadogtoys.com/tough-dog-toys-fire-hose-squeak-fetch-float.html … again within 30 minutes he’d already made a rip in one of the ends.
HE REALLY LOVES getting toys and having them but it would be nice if the insides didn’t end up all over my house within an hour. I usually let him keep the “skins” for awhile but then he eventually starts ripping little pieces of those as well (evidence by the fact that the foot from his big Easter chick is still laying around lol). The destroyer:

He only chews up his toys, never anything inappropriate. So any suggestions?

Labs can be really strong chewers, so it may be tough to find something he can’t chew through. The toys from the link, though, work well for me - I’ve used the ones that are made out of the rubber-y stuff.

The only thing my dog won’t de-squeak within minutes (he’s a border collie mix and KNOWS he can get the squeaker and kill it) is the tennis balls that squeak. They seemed tougher than the other air kong shapes, and he loves to play human fetch with it. He’s somehow worked it out that if he throws it at me (preferably hitting me somewhere on my arm), I’ll go get it and throw it for him. :sigh:

They also make non-stuffed squeaker toys – http://www.dogtoys.com/kyjen-invinclibles-gecko-4-squeaker-orange.html I tried them for my guy, but again, master squeaker killer, got those 4 squeakers and killed them within an hour. But, he played with the skins for a while after without shredding them. So they got that going for them!!

ETA: For pure chewing, perhaps a Nylabone would stand up? The Galileo one is suppose to keep wolves from chewing through…never tried one though. They came out after my guy was past his fierce chewing stage.

If there are any dairy barns by you or you know anyone who lives by one ask for an inflation after they change them in the parlor. The rubber is pretty much indestructible. They are also great for putting dog bones in to encourage chomping. The dairy is just going to throw them out too so they’ll be free and they’ll be plenty of them. My 125 pound shepherd never could put a hole in one and the new little dog who chews like crazy can’t put a hole in the same one (that has lasted almost 10 years) and LOVES it.

If you find something, please let me know.

Our chocolate lab can destroy anything. When we first got him, the Kongs were about the only thing he couldn’t totally destroy. He’s since figured them out, though. Also, he didn’t have much interest in Nylabones when we first got him because they were so tough. However, he has them figured out now, too. A Nylabone around our house has about a 24-hour lifespan. It’s amazing. We should have named him Jaws.

The big ol’ beef knuckles are lasting a few days…anything else is history.

For smaller dogs, an empty plastic Coke bottle is just the ticket. Mine love that crackly sound and have a grand time throwing it about. Just remove the cap and hand to the dog. I usually throw them out about once a month, when I buy myself another Coke.

I have no experience with larger dogs and this toy, though.

No great solutions from me, as I’ve tried most everything. Its not so much my Lab but my 3 y.o. Jack who looves to kill and gut his toys…my poor little Jack puppy is stuck with kongs and nylabones.

Your boy is beautiful!

PS- A friend has a Golden toy-destroyer, yet she keeps all the corpses in Lucy’s toy basket–dozens of ripped-up, destuffed carcasses of toys long dead and gone…!

I have a major chewer too. The regular red 3 tiered Kongs were easily destructed but he wouldn’t even play with the black one. The Kong balls do survive well as there’s nothing to get an “edge” on to start chewing. But they’re solid rubber and don’t make very good toss balls because they’re too heavy.

One thing he loves? The Cuz’s. I “perform surgery” on them before giving them to the dogs–I cut the legs off. I don’t want those getting chewed off and swallowed. Have heard of dogs getting obstructed w/ them. These squeak but if you get the big ones, it sounds more like a duck than a high pitched annoying squeak. So you basically end up with a squeaky ball. This is what we fetch with with both dogs.

Other thing are the regular nylabones. If the dogs aren’t into them right away, you can boil some chicken broth, remove from heat and drop the bones in and they will absorb the chicken flavor. DON’T get the softer ones. They get eaten.

I’ve got an ultimate toy destroyer as well. She destroyed those “tiger tested” supposedly indestructible ones. It took longer, but it happened. However I’ve had really good luck with the Fat Cat dog toys, the ones that are part of the Terrible Nasty Scaries line they have, like Mad Kitty or Mean Kitty. There’s also Big Mean Kitty, which is a huge version of the Mean Kitty toy. Comedy gold in that one. They also used to have one called Suspicious Chicken. The company has a sense of humor obviously. Something about the canvas they use makes these more durable than anything else I’ve tried. http://fatcats.com

There are also a couple lines of flat toys with no stuffing that last longer too for us. Skinneez or something like that. I get them at Petco.

Cats N Hounds

The coloured ones that are sort of “S” or “Z” shaped- they claime to be as indestructable as they come AND will send one new replacement if one gets destroyed

My dogs can even do in Kongs, but they haven’t ruined these… yet

I second the West Paw Design products. Look for the ones made of Zogoflex material (the ones Casey09 mentioned) - the Tux, Hurley, Bumi & Huck. The frisbee one (Zisc) will get chewed. My Lab chewed the entire center of the Zisc out and left the edge intact

Also, they’re made in the USA (Montana, IIRC) from recycled products. If your dog does destroy one of the above products, you can send it back to them for a free one-time replacement.

No, they didn’t pay me to say that. But seriously, that is one great company!

ETA: It’s the Bumi that Cruiser12 mentioned above.

I call them Mr. Squeakys, but they have a real name. Shadow can destroy anything, but we have a Mr. Squeaky that is at least five years old.

Also, the small size Jolly Ball for horses are great.

Have tried the jolly ball… he had a chunk out the handle in 20 minutes lol. Thanks for all the suggestions… will see if I can find some on my next “toy shopping trip”.

yeah, the only indestructable ones are the one he doesn’t like!

I know, I’m helping!

Says the person with the 9 mo BC pup that can destroy anything!

Lacrosse balls are pretty durable and relatively inexpensive, especially if you order them in bulk.

I rinse out milk jugs and let the dogs chew on them. Milk jugs aren’t indestructible, but they are free. No great loss when the dog mauls it. Just make sure to confiscate it once pieces start threatening to come off.

No tennis balls unless supervised (there was a thread on a chewed up tennis ball causing bowel obstruction, I can’t remember, but I’ll bet it was a lab) Kongs and, believe it or not, a nylon lead rope. I hate nylon lead ropes, (like cotton), but have several that were left here when we moved in. I cut off a 4’ length, tied some knots in it, and it’s lasted for over 4 months. The dogs play solo, tug of war (it’s a threesome) and tag with it.

Mind you, I bought a guaranteed, indestructible (or so said the tack shop) jolly ball. It lasted 23 hours.

We have a lab (super destructo) and a fox hound (chewer) and new collie. The collie has some squeaky toys, but only when she’s alone.

The also had fun with an avocado last night. Lab must have swiped it off the counter, handed off to the foxhound (who was extremely flatulent last night). We found the remains on our bed.

I have a black lab who just turned a year old last week. He’s gutted an entire zoo’s worth of stuffed animals, stripped the fuzzy Kongs, and has even eaten a garbage can. When he can’t find anything more challenging to destroy, he eats socks. I know this because I find them in the yard, re-purposed as lawn sausage casings.

Right now as I write this he is chewing the feet off of the duck we use for practice retrieves.

The only toy he hasn’t been able to beat is a roly-poly green cat I bought at PetSmart before I picked him up from the breeder. Nearly a year later, he still has that thing even though he tosses it in the air repeatedly and chews it endlessly and squeaks it againandagainandagainandagainandagain until I go get a martini and don’t care anymore.

There is a tiny hole now at the top of the cat’s back so it may finally give up the fight, but I’ve never seen a toy last so long.

I just noticed Guin has a toy from the same manufacturer–see, they must be good!

EXACTLY!!

I didn’t find many toys my old Shepherd couldn’t destroy in record time. His favorite ended up being the Almost Indestructable Ball (large size).

http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2751746

It’s big enough he couldn’t get his teeth in it and he LOVED that thing. His other favorite toys were sections of thick white cotton lead rope with knots tied in the ends. Those were great for tug and fetch, lasted a long time, and were cheap to replace since I had a coil of rope to make lead ropes.

The current puppy loves free/cheap toys: plastic coffee containers, milk jugs (no lid), and–especially–cardboard boxes. The boxes end up in little pieces, while the other two get well-perforated. Cheap stuffed animals from the secondhand store are also a hit.
