Indian Hemp/Hemp Dogbane

Last year was our first on our farm. In the spring, I was delighted to see the amount of milkweed coming up in some of our marshy and overgrown areas. How wonderful for the butterflies!

Then the stuff started spreading EVERYWHERE, including into one of my pastures. Hmm, I’ve never seen milkweed do that.

When the flowers came out, it became clear I wasn’t dealing with milkweed but hemp dogbane.

All parts of the plant are highly toxic to horses, even when dried. And it spreads like crazy.

Anyone have luck getting rid of this stuff? Allegedly most herbicides are only minimally effective with it. We mow regularly and that seems to help some, but sucker sprouts still shoot back up everywhere. I’m currently pulling it by hand and losing my mind.
