Indoor arena rental fee survey

Just wanted to get an idea of the going rate for renting an indoor arena for riders trailering-in. Not for lessons, just to use the arena independently… (mainly in the NoVA and MD areas, other areas are a bit far to be compared) The barn owner where I work has tasked me with doing some market research, as they feel their prices need updated.

Prices are for renting an INDOOR arena, not outdoor.

Do you charge by the hour? How much?

If you charge “per day” how many hours does that include? Price?

Do you charge per horse/rider or is it a set fee per hour split between as many people want to cram into the arena during that hour?

Do you have a group rate? How much?

Do you have a monthly use fee? How much? Is it TRULY unlimited or are there stipulations as to how many hours per week/month?

Amenities… Do you factor these into the prices you charge? Heated/AC restrooms, heated/ac viewing room, covered tacking up area, etc. (i.e. a higher price is justified due to the amenities you offer.)

I am out of your survey area but will tell you that the places in my part of the world that rent out arena space do it by the rider/horse. Assuming that is about an hour. Now clearly some people go crazy and spend more time and some people use less time. Two horses = two fees.

Most offer a by the month fee too.
Stipulations are on what days/hours they can use the ring (because the barn has its own ring use to take into account).

In my part of the woods (midwest) the only trailering in options, aside from lessons, are one night a week, x number of ours (usually 3 ish in the afternoon/evening, open ride) and $10/horse. This price is at breed show barns.

A big eventing barn in my area charges $15 for haul ins, $175 to rent an arena for a day and $300 to rent an arena for a weekend. It’s a nice facility with great jumps and cross country courses.

Hopefully this gives you a decent idea! I believe all of the above barns require a health certificate and recent coggins.

At 3 MD indoors:

  1. $10/ride, no Pony Club discount, no time limit stated. Has bathroom, tack up areas & wash stall
  2. $15/ride, $10 for Pony Club, no time limit stated. Has bathroom.
  3. $20/hour per horse. PC rate of $50/two hours, regardless of number of horses. No amenities at all.

I’ve been to all three with Pony Club, and only #1 on my own. I’d consider #2, but it’s kind of far, but I think #3’s rates are too high to go to on my own, or even worse with my kid (so it would be $40 for one hour).

We are well out of your survey area, but we do not rent out our indoor to outsiders unless they are in a lesson with one of our instructors. Too difficult to police them - health, cleanup, safety - otherwise. A weekly student of mine (the owner) gets unlimited use of facilities during normal hours. A weekly student of another resident instructor pays $15 a use.

I’ve seen $10-$35 per horse for a typical ride (1 hour).
