Inexpensive BIG dog coat

So, I am moving from lovely sunny Florida to snowy, cold CT. While I do not currently have a horse to buy blankets for, I do have an 84 lb, 33" from collar to base of tail, Greyhound. He has little to no body fat or hair to protect him, and he’s never been out of Florida. Poor guy will have quite the culture shock next month!

So, I would like to get him a coat (and maybe some boots too) or two. I love the greyhound, custom coats, but they are a bit pricey for me at the moment. Has anyone tried the Weatherbeeta Jazz that Dover has?

I would love any suggestions, warnings, sizing tips, etc!

I dislike the Weatherbeetas–I find they pop up in back when the dog puts it’s head down.

I’d hit up ebay for used blankets. Foggy Mountain is a great brand to watch for. Stay away from Tough-1 and Ruff Wear…both just fall apart, IME.

My relatively inexpensive go tos are RC Pets:

And I have several of the Whistler Winterwear and West Coast Rainwear. I also like Fido Fleece a lot

 give them a call, in the past, they would customize a coat for little or even no additional cost.
They are very nice to deal with in case of any problems as well.

(and they support local rescues  )

I’ve had this one going on 3 years now. XL for a 110lb Mastiff who is quite slim and tucked up in shape. She rough houses in it all winter long wrestling with my Border Collie and it takes the abuse.

I was at one time seriously considering buying used miniature horse blankets for my Danes…you can get them pretty cheap through Facebook tack sales pages.

You will need to go with a company that offers a greyhound-type fit line - otherwise when you get that 33" length, the drop & width & neck will be cut for a St Bernard type dog.

K9 Apparel may be your cheapest option in the longer term, check with greyhound rescues & see if they have any more budget friendly suggestions.

(in my area, a single vet visit with new client fee & exam fees would be more than K9’s cold climate special)

I DID buy a little tiny demo Rambo Wug for my Ridgebacks!

The neck, sadly, really didn’t work for them, though. I think a normally cut horse blanket would have been fine!

My local GPA (Greyhound Pets of America) sells handmade coats as a fundraiser. Specially fitted for greyhounds. They also sell pajamas for indoor wear. The coats are nylon on the outside, lined with fleece, with a fleece snood.

Those are an amazing deal!

My co-worker is part of the team that makes the coats. She makes coats with team fleeces, and in different colors to match the color of your greyhound. The coats all have the edges serged and they’re quite sturdy. She made one for me last year for my doberman.

I’ve got a Chilly Dogs coat and just love it. They have a really great strapping system that keeps them in place very well. I tried a few other cheaper coats before getting this one and honestly there is no comparison. http://www.chillydogs.ca/index.php/home. Made in Canada but they ship and distribute to the USA.

Saratog HW is having a sale and they have greyhound cut coats.

The WB Jazz is the kind that velcros on the belly and you have to shove their arms through. I only do turnout style. I will send you my jazz for just shipping costs if you think it’ll fit. I’ll check the size but I am guessing its an XL.

Thank you everyone!!! Lots of good leads, and will investigate all of them.

Vxf111 – thank you for the offer, my big guy needs the 32" size, which is the biggest it comes. I would happily pay shipping if you would be willing to send it to me.

Mine is a 24 :frowning:

You dog must be a big fella!!!

I have 3 Greyhounds and the WB dog coats are not the right cut for them.
IF you can get the length you need, the chest will be too big and the belly straps too long.
I work in a Tack Shop and do have a few WB coats (rain and mid weight), but thankfully I am handy with the sewing machine and can make the necessary adjustments.

For winter, we also use Chilly Dogs, as they have a ‘long and lean’ line.
LOVE them. Almost every one up here uses them.

But WOW…
These http://www.gpanashville.org/store.php look like a fabulous deal!

I think that Voyager K9 Apparel have very well made coats for Greys, too.

Anyone interested in a GPA coat, if you want to send me pics of your dogs, I can ask Lisa to pull coats that should look good with their coats and send you pics of the coats on one of her hounds. She did a beautiful custom coat for my doberman. I’ll have to see if I can find the pics to show you.

Have you looked on Etsy? There are lots of Greyhound owners taking up sewing for their dogs. That GPA price is amazing! I doubt you could beat that, unless you sewed it yourself and only had to buy the fleece & nylon.

Would they make a tiny one for a 20lb mutt ?

Here are pics ot one of the co-worker’s hounds in a GPA coat. Her’s are in a soft-side, non-waterproof coat, since that;s what she likes and she’s the seamstress, but it gives you an idea.

The snoods can be pulled up over the ears on cold days.

I am totally getting a GPA for my 65lbs monster.

OP, have you tried going to a Salvation Army or thrift store for sweaters …I know they will be too big around the middle, but if you just wrap a belt or something around it will be OK to use in a pinch. Or for laying around the house.

MunchingonHay - If you want to send me a pic of your do, I can ask my co-worker to pick some co-ordinating colors.
