Inexpensive run-in built with pallets

Saw this and thought it could be modified for use as a run-in. Some people are so creative!

That’s fantastic! Thanks for sharing!

I wouldn’t trust pallets for any type of horse housing unless the interior was lined with boards and then what is the point of the pallet? The shed is cute though.

It’d probably be easy to line the interior with plywood or something. Like I said, modified for use as a run-in. I just thought I’d share the link. Could be a way to provide quick, emergency shelter for a rescue or other smaller animals…or hay storage…or whatever…not trying to get into a discussion about safety standards.

Couldn’t a horse kick/bust right through pallet wood? Maybe those are different pallets than the ones I am thinking of. The ones I am thinking of are really flimsy, fragile wood.

Okay, forget that I said run-in. Pretend I said hay storage. There you go. Hay storage. Or a goat shed.

I just thought it was a neat idea! And obviously I didn’t think you could use it as-is for a run-in, hence the word “modified” in my original post.

vxf, some pallets are made from heavy oak.

Disclaimer: my horses live in a barn. I will not be constructing this shed for any of my horses to live in.

Whew.

It would work fabulously for a shelter for a sane horse with just a bit of kickboard. Much stronger to have the construction of the pallets supporting the shelter and not just a shelter made out of… kickboards?

No, not all pallets are flimsy, there are several different grades of pallet strength and construction. Some are quite strong.

This would make a great shelter, chicken coop, goat house, wood house, garden shed, just about ANYTHING.

We HAVE made chicken coops, tack sheds and a dog kennel in just this fashion and they’re all still standing decades later.

seabreeze, I totally get it!

Seabreeze–I think it’s a fabulous idea! Hay or bedding storage, certainly. I could see using the pallets, lining the inside 4-6 feet up with plywood, and wham-o, you’ve got a run in. Or goat or sheep pen. Honestly, I must have really mellow horses, because mine don’t sit around my overhang kicking, or sticking their feet in fencing! Lots of possible uses. I know folks who use pallets for manure bins all the time, too. Very, very useful things, pallets. And they just GIVE them away, for FREE! I love free things.

Very cool!!

I tried making a DIY project (hay feeder) with pallets and my only tip to anyone attempting to do something like this is invest, or be choosey and get good pallets!

I thought I had pretty good ones but the wood was flimsy and it ended up being a bigger PITA than anything else!

I need to see/find some of these sturdy pallets! Because mine are flimsy as heck!!!

I have seen (and covert) a “ghetto” run in made with one of those basic carports lined with tounge and groove wood. So I’m very much not above unusual run in ideas  I just don’t have any experience with pallets that I think a horse couldn’t bust right through. Maybe I haven’t seen the right kind of pallets?!

Love it! very cute.

I wonder how those heavy plastic pallets hold up? I saw an ad for them on CL locally and thought they’d stand up to dropping hay on them much better than the cheapy pine ones I have now.

Indeed, there are pallets and then there are pallets. The heavy duty ones are rarely free, and are often reused by the companies that use them. My brother works in freight forwarding (shipping by ship) and he said shipping crates are available too…and are very sturdy.

I used to keep a horse in a 4 stall barn built out of pallets. Lined with kickboards, but the ponies could see through above… it was ghetto, but it worked great.

Someone I knew built a mini proof fence out of them too. I was all stained and sealed, looked nice and kept the little buggers where they were meant to be:)

OP, don’t you know the COTH rule by now??? Upon posting something other than a $$$$$$ Morton barn, you shall be beset upon by “omg, you unsafe horse killer.”

(yes, that is melodrama font but half true, LOL)

And I’m the safety nazi! I actually just built two windbreak walls on part of my run-in shed (which is a wind-rated, engineered carport, horrors) out of pallets, sandwiched between treated plywood. To support the pallets before the plywood was screwed on, they are anchored to the shed supports by…hay string. But we all know that hay string has magical powers, so it all worked out.

In all seriousness, they are very strong, I’m a pallet hoarder & they DO come in many different types, wood treatments, even the new plastic ones. Some weigh about a thousand pounds worth of oak, some I can pick up casually with one hand. I’m so addicted now, go search “pallet ideas” on Pinterest and YOU CAN DO ANYTHING!

It’s just lumber–you can sand it, stain it, paint it, replace boards, add boards, just like anything else. Or not use them at all & just buy lumber. Us po’ folks will just keep hoarding, I guess, hee.

With regard to pallet sturdiness: I scored some giant, heavy, ridiculous pallets from my local Deere dealer. You can see them here:

Each one weighs over 100 lbs. The top pieces are 2" thick.

I could build a KICK ASS run in shed with those

30 yrs ago my dad got some sort of wooden shipping crate, allegedly used to move giant robot thing. He put it up against one side of the barn & kept small tractor & mini spreader in there. It is still good. We have had tarps across the front, on and off.

Non-horsey boyfriend will be modifying this for a run in for my boy. Will post updates when and if he’s successful!

I think it looks like a cool idea.

vxf-we tend to get the flimsy pallets in our neck of the woods. I had originally used them for compost bins, and they did not last at all. The heavy duty oak pallets are hard to find but are awesome.

Did they anchor the support posts into concrete? I can’t tell from the photos if they are set in concrete or resting on small concrete slabs.
