Infected Chestnut???

Today I noticed that surrounding one of my horse’s chestnuts was some yellow - crusty - scabby stuff … the best way I can describe it is it was very similar to the mess you get surrounding the area where you pull off the tick - so much so that I thought I might find a tick in that area - however, I did not find a tick.

I assume its possible that there was a tick there and that it fell off. However, when I tried to clean off the messy gooky stuff there was a bit of bleeding around the chestnut. Although it wasn’t horrible, it almost seemed as though the chestnut might be infected. Just wondering if anyone had seen this before and if so if they did anything special to treat the problem. TIA.

Ooohhh! That sounds interesting. I think we need pics! What have you used to clean/disinfect the area? Front or hind?

I’ve never heard of anything like this. I’m assuming you’d have mentioned if the leg was hot or swollen by the chestnut.

Are ticks a big problem where you live?

I’m interested to see if anyone else has dealt with this.

There is no heat or swelling in the leg - honestly there isn’t a whole lot of anything except some crusting around the chestnut and a bit of blood when I picked off the crusting. It didn’t seem to bother him in the slightest. I would post pictures, but again I don’t think you would be able to see much … it isn’t some huge mess, just a little bit of gunk.

I guess I am just slightly worried that it could turn into a bigger problem. However, it doesn’t seem as though anyone else has seen this so pehaps its a made up problem haha. Although if a horse were to have an unusual problem it would for sure be mine. Thanks for looking though!

I have the same thing happening with my horse. I had the same yellow discharge and also thought it was tick related since we had tick issues about a month ago after a ride. I had planned on cleaning both front legs today and saw that one of his legs was completely swollen. Vet came out and gave injectible antibiotics, diuretic, and banamine. Did you ever figure out if yours was caused by the ticks?

Don’t be surprised if you get no response from the Original Poster (OP) since this thread was started and concluded over ten years ago.
