Insight into Thoroughbred Pedigree

Hi All,

Long time lurker here and infrequent poster, but was wondering/hoping if any of you had insight into my new gelding’s pedigree:

He raced 47 times through his 5 year old year, and then was restarted as an eventer. Did well through preliminary and then capped out there—I purchased him to be my 1m (maybe 1.10m if I can get my act together) show jumper and general pet. He’s excellent on trails, really brave, and a total goofball.

He’s frankly more horse than I need for my current skill level but takes great care of me! I’m more curious than anything!

Thanks in advance!!

Love love love Gone West babies. IME game and athletic, sturdy horses that are pretty personable. The Storm Cat gives you jump and some fuel in the tank (for better or for worse!). I’m sure he’s a powerhouse - and it sounds like it, from his record.

I am completely unfamiliar with the damline, though.

Thank you so much for your reply! So much of that really does sound like him.

He’s been so much fun—personality plus and he does have a super jump!

He’s incredibly honest and also has been quite generous with any ammie mistakes I make.

Every horse I ever met w Alydar in the pedigree had tremendous jump in super style. Some were hotter than others. Intentionally was also a very nice horse.

I just adored Will’s Way. I got to meet him a few times and he was a stunner. Not the easiest personality, but not on a concerning level.

Thank you so much!! I’m a real novice when it comes to TB breeding so it’s so cool to get these insights.

As former big names in racing -those that I recognize are (great grands)Mr. Prospector, Storm Cat, Easy Goer; (great great grands) Raise a Native, Secretariat (of course).Alydar, (great great great grands) Nashua, Bold Ruler,Tim Tam, Northern Dancer, Buckpasser and Intentionally.
My grandfather used to frequent tracks on the east coast in the 1950s and would bring me Turf Magazine and race programs from Saratoga, Monmouth, Hialeah.
Fun stuff !

Literally what horse do you want to know about?

I am completely unfamiliar with Ouragan: he is an atypical stallion in the sense he never even won a race. Those horses don’t often make it to stud. He’s from a family of successful European runners, but even still, a pretty unlikely candidate for breeding despite his expensive pedigree.

His sire, Gone West, was one of the most popular of this day. He was a precious stakes winner who went on to be a hot commodity as a sire, with his stud fee going as high as $150K. He was a thick, good looking horses. Almost quarter horsey, but his offspring were surprisingly versatile. Gone West doesn’t come up all that much in upper level eventing, but surprisingly often in steeplechasers.

Will’s Way just had that classic TB look about him. He was a very successful racehorse, winning multiple G1 races. He was an okayish sire in NY before being pensioned to Old Friends. Going back in his pedigree, that boy is bred to jump with Alydar and Hoist the Flag, two prepotent sires of sporthorses. Emily Beshear’s former 5 star horse “Here’s To You” is by Will’s Way.

Fit to Fight was a good racehorse and all but I think what’s most impressive about him from a sport perspective is that he had a son approved for breeding in Germany who went on to sire major Grand Prix horses.

He sounds like an impressive creature of he held up to 47 starts and then preliminary eventing.

This is all excellent, thank you so, so much!

I’m so novice when it comes to bloodlines that I don’t even know -what- to ask! (I only really recognized the super known names—Secretariat, etc, so I’m a complete newb.). Was mostly curious if anyone recognized bloodlines closer up and what they were like for sport.

He’s been such a good game horse for me—quirky but incredibly athletic and big hearted. I love getting to know a bit more about his history!

He’s more talented than I could ever hope to be. Such a good guy!
