I’m looking for budget breeches (under $100) that make me look like a DQ. They need to inspire me to enter dressage clinics because I at least LOOK like I know how to ride a 20m circle, and distract the clinician from the fact that I barely know how to stay in the saddle and ride fat ponies. Mostly I’d like to go “man these breeches look great, why don’t I knock the mud off my fat pony and get out there and do something.”
I too would like some magic breeches!
Most clinics I’ve attended have been pretty casual, really any full seat breeches are fine and if you want to be queen-y just get a matching saddle pad and polos/boots! I personally try to avoid black breeches for a clinic, since I have black boots and a black saddle and dark horse, so it’s easier for the clinician to see my legs. I wore gray breeches both days in my clinic with Amelia Newcomb this weekend, lighter gray Hadleys the first day and charcoal Ovations the second, with a blue Ariat down jacket, blue saddle pad, and white polos.
If Piper breeches fit you, they are cheap and have great colors. Check out these colors on sale right now: https://www.smartpakequine.com/pt/piper-original-highrise-breeches-by-smartpak--full-seat--clearance-24104 Unfortunately I personally hate the fit, I feel like if you have a small waist and bigger hips/bum they are not ideal. Smartpak’s Hadley breeches fit me much better, but they are more expensive and don’t have many colors.
I haven’t tried the Piper Evolution, since the regular Piper’s dont fit me, but they claim to be a nicer fabric and still within your budget: https://www.smartpakequine.com/pt/piper-evolution-highrise-breeches-by-smartpak--full-seat--clearance-24630
Under $100: Friends really like these: https://freerideequestrian.com/collections/breeches/products/lux-full-seat-breech-emerald (I have not tried them)
Under $60 !! I really like these: https://espritequestrian.com/collections/breeches Nice heavy supportive fabric, cool even in the summer here in FL, just the right amount of stickyness, and higher waistline with nice belt loops! Note they are slightly compression, so they fit tight - follow the size chart and you will be OK.
Horze has some nice options at or near that price point. They frequently have sales on their website - https://www.equinavia.com/half-off-sale
Montar is a bit higher, but you may be able to find them in that range on sale.
You can also find higher end used breeches in that range (Animo, Pikeur, etc.) if you hunt around on consignment sites, eBay, Facebook, etc.
I’ve very occasionally found Animo breeches for that price on clearance directly on their website - www.usanimo.com.
I’m not personally a fan of the SmartPak or Dover breeches - I haven’t found a model that works for me in either line. Both have options in that price range if they fit you.
I have two pairs of the Espirit already!
I do think that the Esprit and Freeride come from the same overseas maker with a different logo. However, the Esprit are much cheaper and their customer service people are nice so that’s why I have two pairs from them!
Bvertigo or hkm.
@Training_Cupid Tangent- how did you like riding with Amelia? I adore her down to earth videos on her YouTube channel. She has explained things in ways that have given me serious “ah ha” moments.
