InsulinWise powder or pellets?

Vet has recommended InsulinWise for my IR horse, and I’m trying to decide whether to order the powder or pellet form. Powder would be more economical, unless horse won’t eat it. Which form do your IR horses prefer? If powder, do you just toss it in with dry feed, or do you disguise it in some way? Tell me your experiences.

Mine refused to eat it any which way so I had to add water to the powder and syringe it down his throat. I needed two 60cc syringes to make it work. It didn’t help insulin levels at all with him (he’s a PPID Thoroughbred who wasn’t IR before the PPID so I don’t know if that matters). Hope you have better luck with it!

Why???

I’ve had great luck with InsulinWise for two IR horses. Both showed a decrease in insulin values from way above normal in the reference range to “high normal” on their next bi-annual recheck after adding it to their feed. I believe the pellets are a newer option, as only the powder was available at the time I had these horses (or at least, the only option my vet had added to her online pharmacy).

I didn’t have issues with my mares eating the powder, but always feed ration balancer pellets wet, generally with some soaked SpeediBeet added for the moisture and to swirl everything around.

They (two horses and one pony) refused both powder on dampened grain/ or in pellet form.
Syringed - a mess and daily fight.
*Numbers remained the same = no difference recorded.
Vet agreed no need to continue the products.
Pitched it in the trash = waste of money.

I did the powder mixed in wet beet pulp. Pony ate it ok. Didn’t do anything when pulled bloodwork.

I have two on pelleted IW. My vet recommended I try it; his opinion is based upon the research Michigan State did. I haven’t retested them yet…. One will eat the pellets w anything. The other will cheerfully eat it with Standlee Gastro Support. The powder was a bust.

I have two on the powdered IW. One gobbles it down and the other won’t go near it and it turned him completely off of his feed it was added to. He was forever done with it. I had to change the brand of pellets. But he’s an oddball with his feed so you may have better luck. He now gets it syringed into him with his prascend in some applesauce and he is happy.
It did change the numbers some. Not a lot, but enough so I keep using it.

I have one on the powdered InsulinWise. She eats it up (dry) on her ration balancer (ProElite Grass Advantage). It reduced her insulin level from 125 to 28. She has now been on it for just over a year.
