Insurance companies for in-utero and new born foals?

Looking to put a list together for a client. Who do you recommend/use for insurance on a new born foal?
Thanks in advance.

Very few offer in-utero insurance for anything except TBs. Cunningham and Cunningham in NY does. It is VERY expensive.

Very expensive from what I hear, which makes sense because that’s when the foal is most at risk. The provider of my filly’s insurance does not cover a foal until it is 30 days old, and this is pretty standard throughout the industry. And her premium for her first year was higher than it will be when I renew, and she is a yearling.

Thank you. She is wanting to insure the foal once it is here. I will pass along the info. Thanks everyone

I had a client who was able to get foal insurance from 3 days of age, but I do not remember the company she used. That will be much simpler than in-utero insurance.

I know several people that used Kaplow for insurance on their embryos in recips. I don’t know the fees at all, but I’m sure it wasn’t cheap.

It’s pretty worthless from what I found. You can insure for pregnancy but only based off value of stud fee (with frozen - not helpful) so cost ends up being close to 40% of insured value. Also, none will cover major medical bills, only mortality for the first 30 days. You will only get paid in the case of death, no vet bills for diagnostics or treatment.

Mary-Lou - is that recent? I searched last year and did not find any policy like that

Yes, foal insurance at 3 days of age seems to be common for some insurance companies. They normally will only insure for two or three times the stud fee. So, if the stud fee was $2,000, you can only insure the foal for a maximum of $6,000.

I agree with Daventry. I am in Canada and I insured a foal from 3 days old. Mine was for more than 3 x the stuff fee but nothing too outrageous. Then again it was when the market was better.

Was the insurance at 3 days for mortality or did it include major medical?

The premium I was quoted for inutero foal insurance was 10% of the insured amount and you could insure for as much as it took to get the pregnancy. So in my case about 6k. So it would be $600 for a $6000 policy and that was for up to 30 days of age.

Edited to add… This was 150 days gestation. Prior to 150 days is more.

I believe that was Jarvis insurance.

It included surgical coverage.

Ranch Adobe, not recent. I used in-utero insurance it in 2005. In hindsight, I should have gambled and saved my $$$.

As far as foal insurance, I think it is still possible to find it for 3 days and up.

I am almost positive that my foal was covered after 24 hrs for mortality for 3x the stud fee (so not his full value or what I put into it, but something.) Then I was able to get major medical after 30 days. They did require a full vet workup, and it was more expensive but I did it. He will be 2 in May and I hope that I can insure him for a little more. I don’t insure my horses at their true value because I figure if I have to collect mortality, I’m going to be devestated and would just want enough to purchase a new project, no amount of money will be able to help replace them in my heart. I really appreciate the major medical though! I use Hallmark Equine Insurance, they are great. They should work with you to insure your foal.

I believe the Jarvis policy is mortality only not surgical/major medical.

Thanks everyone!

Yes, I should have said that mortality coverage starting at 3 days and major medical at 30 is the norm…
