Insurance for eventers

It seems like at the end of every policy, my policy isn’t renewed as the company no longer chooses to insure eventers.

This has happened enough times to make me wonder what will happen when there are no more insurance companies that insure eventers?

Is there a company that has made a promise not to stop insuring eventers? This is getting crazy.

I have had my now-retired horse insured as an “eventer” for 8 years, and just added my new horse as an “eventer” even though we are just puddle jumpers! There was a (very small) surcharge to list him as eventing vs. pleasure (like a few extra $$/month). I am with Equisure / Hartford

I use Lloyds. Not cheap, but they have been very good to me. My broker has a couple of cheaper options as well.

Personally, I would expect that some company will always be willing to serve the market at the right price. I do think premiums are likely to continue to rise for a bit.

I couldn’t even get insurance on my horse despite our eventing being mostly small logs.

In my corner of the world, we are being hit twice because of sport and breed; owners are being dropped and/or denied for insurance on Irish Draughts and sport horse crosses because insurance companies aren’t covering “drafts.” Some people have been able to argue their point and get coverage and others aren’t.

I have a draft cross insured with Hallmark, with beg novice as the level. Why won’t they insure drafts, Irish horses? With so many warmbloods coming down with that neurologic issue, I’m surprised that’s not an issue.

No idea, owners were just told that they weren’t renewing or weren’t accepting a policy on a “draft” when ID owners were requesting renewals or quotes. I put in a quote request through Blue Bridle and it’s been crickets, so I’m going to follow up with a phone call today. ID are neither drafts nor are they WBs, so whatever neurological issue you mean is not the issue.

My policy also just got disqualified for renewal due to eventing. I’m switching to Equisure, they had a comparable policy option to my previous at slightly higher rates.

My policy dropped eventing coverage. I shopped around but couldn’t find comparable coverage I was comfortable with. Our primary discpline is jumpers, although I enjoy eventing and was hoping to move up to novice this year. I decided not to event purely because of the insurance issue. Its crazy I can insure my horse for almost any height as a jumper, but couldn’t find similar coverage to go do 2’11" eventing.

Semantically, they ARE “drafts.” “Draught” is just the British spelling of the word Americans spell “draft”. No difference in meaning.

I wasn’t talking semantics, I was talking breeding. Irish Draughts aren’t drafts in the sense that a Percheron or Clydesdale is a draft.

Yes exactly.

A friend uses Lloyd‘s and has also been very happy with them. My driving pony is insured through Markel, but they wouldn’t touch my husband’s lower level eventer. He has coverage through Broadstone.

I use Lloyd’s as well, through Smith-Embry Insurance. They have been really good about covering claims. They still consider Prelim to be “lower-level eventing,” so I’m happy.

My low level eventer is insured with Hartford. No problems.

I’ve used Hartford (via Broadstone) for years. They cover "eventing up to 4’ " and I haven’t had an issue with horses through prelim.

I did have one horse kicked off, but it was unrelated to his eventing career, just too accident prone.

They have maj med that don’t require your horse to be high value (IOW, you can get MM on something directly off the track), but it doesn’t cover all the most modern treatments. I think it paid 50% of an MRI, and I did the PRP out of pocket completely.
