Insuring a foal

I am expecting my first foal in the next week or two and want to insure him/her. Is there a minimum age to insuring? When is an appropriate time to insure? Super excited for my little one and want to make sure to cover my bases. Thanks for any advice.

You can insure a foal from the minute it hits the ground. But it is crazy expensive. If you wait until the foal is 10 days old the cost becomes reasonable.

Call your insurance company to get the rates

And if you wait to 30 days, it drops again.

Agree with others (based on experience with one and only one foal I’d purchased at 10 days). Insuring before 30 days very expensive and not all companies will even do it. At 30 days, the cost was in line with insuring an adult horse of equivalent value (mid 4 figures).
