Intensive riding camps?

Hello,

A family friend’s daughter is looking for a riding camp for 1-3 weeks this summer. She is 14 and does children’s hunters with her own horse, who she could or could not bring. I know there are a lot of sort of training camp type things for varsity athletes for other sports, but are there any camps like that for riders ? I couldn’t think of any.

Thanks!

It seems that there is not much of this offered in h/j land. There is an AWESOME eventing instensive riding camp for Jrs. at GMHA in Vermont. I think it is called the Jr. Horsemanship Camp or something. Top notch instruction all day long so if she is ok with trying some new things she might love it. Total immersion of all things horse, horsemanship and riding.

Stoneleigh Burnham in Greenfield, MA has a riding camp and that has more of a h/j vibe to it (although they do eventing too). It is the Bonnie Castle Camp.

The only other camps I can think of have good horse programs but are more of a traditional “summer camp” experience with swimming and archery and crafts and all that stuff. Camp Forest Acres in Fryburg (sp?) Maine, Camp Nashoba North - there are a bunch of those out there.

They also have a week-long “Intensive Riding Camp” that’s focused on H/J and IHSA/IEA riding.

OP, what area would you be looking in? It can be possible to set something up privately in a sort of boot camp if you are not in New England.

When I was 14 I went to summer camp for 2 weeks at the Ethel Walker School in CT. It was soooooo much fun and definitely an intensive experience! There were girls that brought their own horses as well, and some that showed at Farmington. This was 15 years ago, of course, but it looks like things are still up and running.

Thanks everyone, great ideas! Either Zone 1 or 2, but New York or NE would be ideal since they are from NE.

Foxfield! It’s across the country, but oh, so fun. they do tons of activities and it’s a great way to get exposed to other things to do with your horse, as well high quality H/J instruction. I went when I was 17 and it is still a highlight of my life.

I second Foxfield - yes it is in California, but you asked for high quality varsity type training.
