Interest in Ladies foxhunting clinic weekend

Whose Almanac?

We are back up at 70F today. The weather forecaster said our ave temp for this time of year is 40F. Maybe the last of the snow and ice will melt before we get some more. One of my horses is starting to shed, too. There was a roadkill skunk beside the road yesterday. Spring is trying to make amends for last year.

Whose almanac was used for the weather prediction? Hagerstown has a completely different climate from ours. Keep lots of space in the luggage for all the different possibilities.
It has to be better than last year, right?

Flint Hill’s zip.

It was mid-50s here yesterday. I went to the barn in ONE layer and wasn’t freezing! I even carved out a horse shaped head from Grey’s yak hair.

There is some greenish stuff on the ground outside my window. I can almost remember a time when I wasn’t cold.

THERE’s HOPE!!!

Hey y’all - I just came in from riding. In a short sleeve shirt!!!

And my horses were sweaty.

I saw a fly. Portent of things to come…

Got hay moved, pasture and paddock dragged - all sorts of chores done.

Winter ain’t over yet.

But spring is right around the corner.

Whicker - I love those high waisted britches. You can still have them made - there’s a company in England that makes them in different fabrics. They also have flared britches - a much better look for most women riders. Good prices.

SOOOO jealous that you were riding! We’re having beautiful mid 50’s weather here today, but I’m stuck in the office…
Tomorrow will be cooler, but I’m hoping to convince the pony to slog through the snow in the arena for a while, try and get my sea legs back before the great spring CotH hunt!
No paddock or pasture dragging here. Despite a few days above freezing, paddocks are all still full of fairly deep snow or a thick layer of packed snow & ice. Sigh!

Smart Alex,
Are you sure that green stuff you saw wasn’t manure en glacee?(where are those high faluting french accent signs when you need them?)

It is amazingly warm here! We will see on the evening news if the 76F record was broken. Sooo much better a record to break than last year’s!

Oh sure, now you guys get the nice weather just in time for it to turn ugly out here! Its a very chilly low-50’s here, which doesn’t sound that bad until you add in a freezing cold wind blasting in off the ocean. Big storm coming through tonight, with actual thunder possible (VERY rare here).

I went up to ride this morning and quickly decided in favor of self-preservation and got off. When horses are used to a constant mid-70’s and sunny, a change like this is the equivalent of dynamite. WAY too much of an excuse for insane behavior! I figured I really didn’t need to test the stopping power of a french link snaffle against a very large draft cross mare determined to bolt.

Please hold onto the nice weather until I get out there!

I took my Jack Russell for a run on the W&OD trail today at lunch and a guy was running BAREFOOT! And I kid you not it was actually warm enough. Poor shaggy Jack was dying after a mile. And it wasn’t even sunny, more like partly cloudy w/wind! I think the groundhog nailed it this year! Early Spring in Hunt Country!

Windy and warm

We have “March” type winds to go with the warm 50’sF today.

The kind of wind that blows the trees and big branches down. For some silly reason, ODH decided not to hunt today… Can’t imagine why…

I hope it blows some of the shedding hair out of the horse’s coats. It certainly will dry the soggy from the melting ice and snow in the woods. Probably lots of new jumps in there, too!

Me loves Cammie but…

Oh Cammie…you left yourself open for this!!
“Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa, waaaaaaaa!!
OOOOooooo its 50 degrees and just AWFUL out here!!!”
CRY US A RIVER!!! We been puttin’ up with snow & ice & wind for months now and you guys get a little rain and coolness and start whinin’!! Geeeez, have some cheese & crackers with that whine!!!:p:p:p:p
I know you know better; but we still loves ya!
I really loved the part about how the horses are SOOOO used to 70 degrees…yeah…me too!!!

32 here and VERY windy…but I hopped on pony girl bareback for a short ride anyway. Despite my best efforts she still was not at all interested in wading through the deep snow. I don’t know why she’s such a wimp…it doesn’t even touch her belly anymore!
We only rode for about 15-20 minutes, but I got lots of manure out of the paddock…Yippee!
Tonight it will be back down in the teens and with the wind, much colder. But we know that spring is coming! (it must be…three sentences in a row ended with an exclamation point…I’m downright adolescent)

Hey, I fully admit to being a weather wimp now! After being out here 14 years, my blood has thinned considerably. I like going home over the winter for a nice long weekend just to experience some cold and snow, but that’s enough for me now. No desire to experience it for months at a time. Why do you think I haven’t moved back??

Its always entertaining around New Years when the Rose Bowl fans show up. Usually its people from places like Wisconsin or Nebraska. They’re all wearing their shorts basking in the warmth of 55 degrees, while all the locals are in sweaters and coats shivering. Its all relative!

You should see the horses though. Barn full of snorting spooking maniacs at the idea of high winds and chilly air. That combined with the fact that there is essentially no turn-out to get the ya-ya’s out…no thanks!

 My fella was up for about a day, the first time it was dry enough to ride in the ring for weeks, and kinda windy and brisk. Then he was like, oh crap, we gotta start doin’ this again? All the time?:eek: All the up went right out :sigh:

me bad…

Cammie hasn’t moved back cuZ I guess she’s smart…hate to admit it but…we may have ice/snow/wind but we ain’t got no stinkin’ earthquakes!!:eek: Man that would really ruin hunting now wouldn’t it! And the shorts thing? Seen it here already too! Spring has sprung and so has brushfire season. Ya’ll bring your shorts so we can laugh at your lily white legs!

Saw smoke plumes from several fires yesterday all over central VA.

One area in Powhatan County was close to evacuating people and horses.

My power was out when I got back from hunting due to the high wind downing a dead tree on a power line, which broke and started a small brushfire. Luckily they got it put out with only a few hundred yards of burned grassy verge destroyed. But power was out for several hours, so I had to find somewhere else to shower to get ready for my dinner date.

I think my legs will stay in breeches, thank you very much  You ever notice how you get a version of truck driver’s tan in the summer? Your top half gets all brown, and you put on a dress and it’s like neon marshmellows! Maybe the answer is more bareback…but riding in shorts is uncomfortable no matter what :stuck_out_tongue:

I definitely get the farmers/truck drivers tan…little brown v-neck & sleeves  Cammie, I know just what you mean about spotting the northern visitors in SoCal. My sister has lived out there for years, lives on Coronado now. When I visited her last year in December I was walking around in sandals & sweatshirt while the locals were in down jackets.
Jawa, sorry to hear about the fires…hope all is well. Dinner date? Sounds very romantic…

Hinderella,

About 100 acres was burned just across the river from me. 16 miles of one of the major interstates was shut down. The fire jumped the road and burned the median. A few sprinkles of rain fell for about 10 minutes yesterday. We are back to super warm, high wind, extreme fire danger weather again today.

The dinner date was wonderful. We meet up with about 9 other couples for cocktails and dinner.

The date is getting closer!!! Yeah!!!

Here too, jawa. A friend called to warn me of a fire heading my way. Luckily the fire dept put it out.

On the way to a party we saw plumes of smoke all over the countryside.

When we were driving back home we saw someone in the car ahead of us throw a lit cigarette out the passenger side window. Sparks everywhere.
:mad::mad::mad: I wanted to pummel the jerk.

Oh goody. Now it’s going to snow. And then rain. Gack.

Wonder what the course is going to be like Sunday.
