Interest in Ladies foxhunting clinic weekend

I’m a tiny bit sore, but nowhere near what I would have expected for an out-of-shape couch potato. I attribute it to the endorphin effect: hunting and hacking out in the beautiful hills of Virginia on well trained horses makes you so happy that you don’t feel pain

Being serious for a minute, though, I do believe that riding a made hunt horse, on which you can feel totally confident, makes a tremendous difference. On the morning of the hunt, I felt the stiff wind and the cool temperatures, and I realized that at home, I would be cautious about riding in the ring, never mind in an open field. I would be tight & tense, expecting a spook or a generally challenging ride. With HR’s horses, I’m not worried, and I can relax and focus on riding properly.

Exactly! It’s a lot less work to be on a horse you know will continue straight ahead on the designated course for the next 100 yards, and quite another to be bouncing from trot to canter, stop, reverse, deal with the rooting, work through the potential spook… blah blah bah

Lack of soreness = good-gaited made horse.

Perhaps. But lack of soreness can also = ibuprofen + robaxin + vodka and/or port

Sorry I missed everyone. My home hunt had a surprise joint meet and it was necessary to change my plans that day. I very much enjoyed meeting Cammie and applaud her very excellent riding skills. I was behind her when she rode the spook, and that horse is athletic with a capital “A”!

Ever have a day where nothing goes as planned? That was pretty much Thursday (horse stuck a 12" thorn branch down his throat) and Friday (Other horse had back issues) and Saturday (change in hunt day) and Sunday (sick kid) and Monday (weather) , well, it’s continuing today (gum surgery needed, and farrier is 5 hours late)!!!

If anyone local would like to do a group ride somewhere (Phelps, Kelly’s Ford, etc.) or do a tack tour lunch in Middleburg, I would love to do that, and soon! I hope the little black cloud ruining my days will be gone by then.

I’m bummed I didn’t get a chance to ride with you again today Timely Impulse! I was hoping I would see you out with us.

I went out with Hunter’s Rest today for a joint meet with Old Dominion and Rappahannock. Out for 2 1/2 hours without any sign of a fox, but I had a great time. Lots of galloping and trotting with a fun horse on a beautiful day through some nice farms.

I managed not to whack myself in the face today, so all is good.

It was nice to meet Cammie on Saturday at the RH meet and then see her out again today. Saturday and today were perfect examples of the vagaries of hunting. I would have thought for sure that Saturday was going to be a trail ride due to the full moon and warm temps the night before. Instead we had three cross our paths.

Today I thought we were in for a big day but not a fox was seen anywhere. The ODH huntsman worked hard for the day but nothing was found which was not his or his hound’s fault. I think that is the first quiet day I have ever had with ODH.

It was a great breakfast afterward.

A very wise foxhunter told me many years ago, “Only the fox and hounds know if it will be a good day. All else is just guessing.”

I don’t know of a better way to spend a day: being with friends, riding horses, across beautiful country, and following a gorgeous pack of hounds.

Hoping to be able to go out Thursday with my hunt and then our closing meet is Sat, but it looks like we might get too much wet weather either before Thurs, or on Sat itself.

OOooooh, Timely - I’d LOVE to meet at one of those places for a big ride sometime! Never been to Kelly’s Ford.
ODH (and most area hunts) have trail rides thru the rest of the spring/summer. I host one here, likely on Saturday June 4, typically at 9 or 10 am, 2 hour walking only followed by lunch. Hope to see many of you!

We were also thinking about riding the Brandy Station Battlefield. Largest cavalry battle of the Civil War, and the opening salvo in the Gettysburg Campaign.

cammie - I’m glad you emerged unscathed today! Glad you had a great time.

OK my back has been sore since Friday. But it seems like that would be normal when you ride 5x more than in a typical weekend. Plus the hunting saddle is different than the deep cushy dressage saddle and HRs horses were much fitter. Also I have always been inside on that soft red rubber stuff, not cantering up gravel roads leaving 8 year olds on ponies to eat my dust (Brook just wants everyone to know he is more than just old reliable & quarterhorse’s have their pride!)

On the bright side, my instructor has always said more saddle time would help me enormously and it seems as though she was correct. Last night at my lesson on the 17.2H KWPN I kicked dressage a$$! HR fixed my leg position and it was much easier w/my knees in the right place; I even sat my canter properly for the first time ever (seems it helps to not be flopping around everywhere). We didn’t even practice that all weekend and yet it worked! That was a big surprise. And my keeping weight in my heels seems finally to have stuck too.

Now of course I can’t concentrate on work. I keep perusing the horse ads. If anyone has any suggestions on getting Mr Lesson13 to come around regarding fencing the property & buying me a truck and trailer please let me know…

Miss y’all. Didn’t think I’d feel like riding on Monday, but promised a friend I’d work her mare for her while she was in Wellington - surprise!! felt tight as a tick in the tack - I’ll attribute this to the mega saddle time at HR - even jumped a course and felt fairly with the program - that’s rare!

Jealous of all of you planning trail rides, etc. I want to come up this summer…

Hinderella and Smart Alex - talked to my Mom on the phone yesterday and she said it was snowing in CT - I sooo feel bad for you… yuck!

Take care, princesses!

So nice to have finally met the Hunting Princesses…you all are a hoot! And thank you to Whicker and her family for hosting such a delightful party.

I am up for local rides too…and hunter paces…and (baby) eventing buddies…

We got back to bare ground and mid-fifties, but we’re being treated to a March snow storm today with about 5 inches of HEAVY snow. No worries, I’m headed south towards WV for a meeting so should be melted by the time I get back.

I think it’s awesome the increased saddle time gave some of you a boost. I haven’t ridden again. Despite feeling spry, I have “hunt lag” so I have just been trying to carve a horse out of the hair and the mud and catch up on my real life.

Smart Alex,
Where in WVA? Parts of that are close to us, heh, heh, heh! I could also mosey over for a hunt chat if you are there for awhile… Nothing like hunt withdrawl, is there??:slight_smile:

Poor Baby!

In other news, I found out why my dressage diva was so unhappy at the coth hunt. Vet checked her for tick borne diseases and she has one that is easy to cure. She was kind to carry me at all, feeling as badly as most horses feel with it. Give us 2 weeks and we should be up to joining the trail riding with you all.

The trillium flowers will be blooming soon on the mountains near Paris, Va. (That’s near Upperville and the Appalachian Trail) I can ask my endurance friends about other good spots, too.

I have trails here at my farm that are beautiful, if you all want to come to Orlean. I’m technically in the Warrenton hunt territory, although when I bought the farm it was in ODH.

Who else is interested in some baby event training? I do love comrades in crime… P.M. me.

Prince Whicker Desires Your Missives

Prince Whicker has respectfully requested any photos of the princess party, especially the ones of him.

Prince Whicker met the hunting princesses at the door to graciously escort them into our humble abode. He was wearing real chain mail and helmet in the Norman 11th century style. He is tall and the full regalia with weapons is quite intimidating! Several princesses thought he was a dummy model, as they approached the door… Then He moved…:eek:

Wateryglen engaged him in conversation, and there was a flurry of nervous chatter as the princesses tried not to swoon!

Later he changed into court attire of a Prince of the Realm. Quite dashing! More swooning…:D:lol:

Back in rainy, soggy California now. No riding for me until at least next week. We had a whopper of a rain storm while I was gone, with more today through Saturday. It takes days for the ground to firm up enough to ride safely after any significant rainfall here. The kitty and I will be busy practicing our backstroke across my flooded patio in the meantime.

Elghund2, it was quite nice to meet you as well. I was glad to see a familiar face from Saturday.

I’m sure I will have more airline miles to burn again, so summer trail rides or perhaps a hunting weekend in October could very well be a possibility for me.

I had a very nice time meeting everyone, and look forward to coming back to ride again soon!

Whicker - oh geez I didn’t even think of that. And here we were thinking she was just in season. Poor thing. I hope she feels better soon.

Cammie, I thoroughly enjoyed hanging out and hunting with you. Please do come back in the fall.

Whicker,
Tell the prince to check his regular email. And check yours too. If the prince pics aren’t there I’ll need to resend when I get back from skiing. But I’m pretty sure I sent them. Tell the prince’s brother to check as well. I might have sent to the wrong dude.

It was great seeing everyone last weekend! I’m embarrassed to say, I wasn’t brave enough to walk up to those I haven’t met and introduce myself. Apologies, dear COTH princesses, I can be a chicken. Although I didn’t get to spend time with everyone in the hunt field, or enjoying the fun filled outings Hunter’s Rest planned (seriously - a private tour of Mr. Poe’s kennel!)?!), I’m happy to report I didn’t walk away from my short trip empty handed… I can’t wait to report on my new hunt pony… sometime - next season.

Sooo, have we picked a date for next season’s soiree? As lovely my mare has emphatically stated that she has no interest in returning to VA (born and raised Virginian that she is)

Any chance you lovely ladies would be interested in hunting up north in NJ??? Perhaps we can have a Northeast Hunt Week? Any one interested??? You’d be surprised at how beautiful the view is here in NJ’s, Amwell Valley. Please, please, please. We can schedule a beach ride too!! Perhaps around Halloween?
