Interest in Ladies foxhunting clinic weekend
Unfortunately, my skillz, they are not mad. I am very, very rusty. (and I have mounting block issues. For realz.) Also, I seriously violate the rule that states one’s ass should not be bigger than one’s horse’s. Although, in my defense, Drummer is a very narrow Saddlebred. But still…

I will confess, though, that I’ve been thinking that by next October, a trip south could be in the works, and figuring out how to make it happen, skillz-wise.
Yay. I’m going to be there in the fall myself!

My not-so-mad skillz are pretty rusty, too - and with the weather, I’ve had no chance to knock the rust off. I does not haz mounting block issues - my nag won’t stand still long enough for me to use one.:o

But my trainer’s coming over Friday to whip me and the Grey Goose into some kind of shape. I figure if I start this week, by fall I should be ready.

Actually, the knowledge is attributable to being born a Crispin. Patron saint of cobblers and saddle makers, feast day Oct. 25, which is the day on which the Battle of Agincourt occurred, thus the St. Crispin’s Day Speech.

Though for hunting references, the end of the ‘once more unto the breach’ speech in Act 3 scene 1 is maybe more appropriate:

I see you stand like greyhounds in the slips,
Straining upon the start. The game’s afoot:
Follow your spirit, and upon this charge
Cry ‘God for Harry, England, and Saint George!’

for the Hunting Princesses

I so wish there was an equivalent to Hunters Rest in the midwest! My dream is to hunt in Virginia, and even technically have access to hunt horses in the area, but getting away from rural Oklahoma just never seems to happen.

If there’s hunting and parties, and I can get there, I’m there! Work does still get in the way (but I can see the retirement light at the end of the tunnel…)

Meanwhile I bide my time as a cowgirl princess, it’s not all bad…

Signed up

ready to Hunt with ODH with you all. Will be there Friday late afternoon, friend, horses and fun in tow.

Aw geez is there gonna be a shakespeare quiz?

Cuz I cant fit my cliff notes into my frock coat.

Actually, I’m not sure I can fit into my frock coat either.

HenryV is a powerful play.

Note to self:

If thou dost not get off thou well padded hiney and go to the barn to ride, despite the fact that is snowing and cold and crappy for the 9th week in a row, thou wilt be counted with the pre-fallen and walk like Festus’ crippled aunt…

:sigh: It would be so much more pleasant to stay at my desk and nap through lunch :sleepy: This whole staying in shape throughout the winter is getting OLD. OLD I tell you. And I keep losing the same half pound over and over.

Smart Alex, I will be joining you in the pre-fallen crowd. Another 8-10 inches of the nasty white stuff today, and nowhere to put it. I may have to break down & take a lesson somewhere that has an indoor and horses for hire, as we can’t even get truck & trailer in and out of the barn right now.

So perhaps those of us going to Virginia from the wintry north can beg HR to take it extra easy on us?

Extra easy. No worries.

First I ditched my stirrups, then my entire saddle to make my riding time count more. Now I’m looking at having to start two point at some time, and I’m actually dreading putting the saddle back on. Today was the first day I made it all the way through my cantering without mane or neck strap.

And my “girthy” horse has had to give up nipping when I tighten the girth in exchange for nipping when I buckle the stirrup leather around his neck. Which tells me he has no legitimate complaint and is just an opinionated old coot.

ETA: My husband (who has no idea what he’s getting into) was just now quizzing me as to what his budget and itinerary was going to be for this trip, and got side tracked planning the contents of my flask(s) and what to bring as an offering at Friday’s Cocktail Hour.

Gotta love him!

I encourage everybody who’s even remotely interested to come and see - follow in a car, on foot, whatever. Foxhunting is an intellectual pursuit - such fun and really interesting.
There is unlimited room to cartop, and to party with us, and to go to the races etc.
So, don’t hesitate.
Verrry tentatively crawls out from under her rock:

After being diagnosed with a 3rd ruptured disc , I enlarged my dugout under my rock and have not left since! But. I would love to be around this horsey merriment (even if it’ll make me a little sad/envious). I would LOVE to see Whicker and meet her lovely ladies.

I have sat on a noble old foxhunter who gave me a lovely, frisky-in-the-cold trail ride two weeks ago. He’s awesome. But 1) my ^%#(@)@)$&%^! back 2) I suffer gravely from hoof picking, girthing, bending, lifting, life-ing so while I’ll cheat to enjoy him, I cannot safely ride enough (since riding mandates lots of hoof picking, grooming, girthing oh how I so dearly miss barn time ) to join this merry band mounted. Of course if I rode enough, I’d be crippled and bedridden under my rock!

Soooo is there a roster of car followers? I have a Toyota Matrix but is not all wheel drive. I’m shy. I’m in NoVa. I listen more than I talk ;). I make a delectable pinwheel appetizer  and strawberry dip and blondie bars and … -yeah replacing horses with food is bad coping :frowning:

Hey - no worries. Several of us have x rays that make orthopaedists keel over in horror.

HR and Whicker et al will see to your car following - but please remember bassets on Sunday. It’s on foot. Even with your horrible back problems you should be able to handle it - you can walk.

Beagling/basseting is organized in the same way as foxhunting. Just in miniature. Master, huntsman, whippers-in, hounds, field master, field, but the quarry is the cottontail rabbit (around here.)

The terminology is the same as well.

I am going to do an official stirrup cup before the move off from Hunter’s Rest that morning, Saturday March 19 ( 8am? 9 am?) and then an official hunt breakfast (a quickie, grab-it-to-go sort of meal – combination house-warming party) up at the house afterwards.
Later, closer, I’ll come up with an official menu – though its likely to be beef chili (from JSwan’s last bit of beef from last year) and sides, for those of you who would be willing to provide some of the ‘sides’. I’m thinking a few orders of little cornbread muffins, some cookies, maybe a jug of cider or two. Anything easy to pop into the mouth and easy to port (because everybody will be wanting to hustle away for the Warrenton races that afternoon.) So I’m expecting a trickle of people coming in from hunting early who will pop up, grab a bite, admire my new sunroom, and scoot. Those of you who want to bring something, please think of your speciality in those terms and let me know.
Re: cartopping/non-riding participants – aboslutely positively. Please the more the merrier. I’ll hook you up with experienced hunt followers.

HR - You want me to bring pulled pork and sandwich fixings? I can throw it all in a cooler. It should feed at least a dozen people. Whatever isn’t eaten you can just keep and freeze.

My husband will be car-topping, so Bicostal, you will not be the only one from the CoTH group to do so.

BiCoastal, Please Join Us!

I am sooo glad you crawled out from under your rock long enough to set up an antenna to us!

You KNOW I want you to come.

We will have car followers for the foxhunt section. I’ve car-followed with Waterglen. She is a former fieldmaster (of a different hunt) and her buddy is the communications guru for the area. They can find the mounted field when no one else can. Plus, they are friends with most of the landowners, which magikly, literally, opens gates. Plus, where ever Waterglen is, there is yummy food!

JSwan can tell you lots more about the bassets. Foot following can be quite slow. Walking was the gait of the day when I was out, with lots of being in one place.

The bunnies tend to travel in small-ish circles around you. Makes it much easier to view the action! If you miss the first flush, just turn around and you have a second chance. The bassets are soo much fun to watch, they are so proud of themselves. They love having an audience so close to them. The bunnies are much faster than they are. There isn’t much of a chance that the pack will catch up.

Since JSwan, Wateryglen and I all have major back issues, we can share our tricks for comfort. I was loaned a walking staff by Waterglen. It helped me for the day after hilltopping for the first time. (It also was the first time for my horse. Went very well.)

The Tea afterwards was great fun, too.
The partying doesn’t require a horse, just a willingness to learn and share the joy. Plus, I want to hear about your dog training for agility. My Alaskan Malamute puppy, Kabuki, is learning the basics for it. You have lots to bring to this soiree. Please come!

YAY!

I feel so welcome to come join! Yippeeee!!

Hunter’s Rest- I am happy to make cornbread muffins. Or anything else you’d like to assign. Can you give me details (how many, what time, where)?

I am not sure how the different groups are being organized so who is going to what: are car-followers joining this lunch? It sounds like there are A LOT of activities happening on a few different days…

JSwan- I would be delighted to go hound walking! Walking is the one activity I can do as long as I can squeeze in a couple stretches/sitting breaks if the walk lasts for more than an hour or two. You have so much knowledge on hounds and hunting: what an awesome day this will be!

Whicker- I would LOVE to inspect your modifications that enable you to ride! And yes I am trying to create a new hobby in agility. There are a lot of former riders in the sport. Admittedly, it hasn’t really won my heart but I’m putting the foundation on my new dog which keeps me busy and smiling. May I please give your maresy a big hug and bottle some horsey smell to take home?
