Interest in Ladies foxhunting clinic weekend

Cool beans. But I am but a babe in the woods when it comes to hunting knowledge - HR will hook you up with really experienced people no doubt.

Hey - we should all bring our back xrays to compare them.

Looking forward to seeing everyone again - and meeting the new folks. It’s snowing again here, the horses are not being ridden… and spring seems very far away. :frowning:

Wahoo Wah!

BiCoastal, I sent you a p.m.

Both maresies, Wren and Ruby, have said that they would be happy to provide horsie smells for your takey-homey perfume atomizer. Bring a cloth to be used as a rub rag. I’ll have to see if Brad, the wine expert, can come up with a way to distill the essence…:lol:

P.S. The gelding herd wants to know why you are biased against them. They may stage a protest, if they can’t participate. They are checking Title 9, too!

I called my BFF on the way to the barn the other night and said “Remind me again why I’m going to a riding lesson at 7:15pm on a Monday in 20 degree weather after commuting 100 miles and working 9 hours and getting up at the butt crack of dawn”.

All she could come up with was that I’m clearly deranged.

But the correct answer is You won’t regret it when you go hunting.

And I cannot tell you how it makes me so happy every time I go on here and get to think about the fun we are going to be having. Few things in life are better than anticipation and I get to anticipate this for the next couple of months & I’m so psyched. I’m so looking forward to meeting everyone I haven’t met yet. And as the winter gloom sets in I feel like there’s light at the end of the tunnel.

HR I’ll bring cider and cookies (Just don’t expect me to actually personally bake them cause I can drop by Wegmans for something tasty but that’s about it for my culinary skills).

P.S. What brand of rust breeches do people recommend?

Lesson13, I’m looking forward to meeting you (the star of the show) and everyone else soon too. I would gladly go through all of that to ride if I could, but alas, there is no indoor where I keep my pony so I will be woefully out of shape by March.
You can check with HR & Whicker, but I don’t believe you need to go out and get rust breeches for this event, whatever neutral sort of tan/beige/etc breeches you have will likely be just fine. I’ve actually looked long & hard for a good buy on rust breeches on eBay, just because I like them, but haven’t found any good candidates, only some very old-school pairs with the billowy thighs
I’ll have to ponder my culinary contribution a bit. While I can cook, DH does it much better and usually muscles me out of the kitchen after looking over my shoulder and trying to “correct” what I’m doing.

Please, rust breeches are only required for members of the ODH hunt who have been awarded their colors. Not for visitors/guests. Please wear buff/beige.

I will wear buff/beige for the event but if rust is so slimming I may need to get myself a pair for general use.

I would think they would hide the dirt really well. I have a pair of chocolate FITS and they are so much better than the pale ones for that.

Hinderella if I’m going to be the star of the show I will need a stunt double for all the riding scenes; one with a younger face and a smaller butt! Otherwise I’m just a chorus girl bringing up the rear!

Ha!!

:lol::lol::lol: Ha! Bringing up the rear… Snork!!!:lol::lol::lol: and a beige covered one will work just fine!! And what brand?!! Any brand you can pull up and snap & zip!! That’ll git R done!
Stunt double!?? I use crash dummies…they are already pre -fallen.

Hunt Breakfast

HR, How would some cheese and crackers be for the breakfast?

Also, I was going to offer, but didn’t know the extent of your planning ahead. I’ve got a greenhouse full of spring mix, spinach and swiss chard and some potatoes, butternut squash and delicata squash in winter storage. I would be happy to bring some veggies for dinner sides for everyone for the weekend. Can probably also bring a few dozen eggs from our hen house if you need them.

Let me know.

Alison

Rust breeches

You asked about makers of rust breeches. There aren’t many to choose from. Which is weird, since George Morris rides in them. Generally speaking, the show ring hunters do whatever he pronounces as the Word From On High. My guess is that Schoeller fabrics hasn’t felt like running that color in their mills, and that’s where most of the excellent fabric for breeches comes from.

First, look at equessentials. Made to measure, with whatever bells and whistles, and deerskin wherever you want it. Quite addictive and long wearing, with repairs and new deerskin available whenever you need them. They also will alter their breeches, so if your weight changes, you are still in business. Nice people to deal with, too. My son has a pair, winter weight, and Betsy really liked them. I think Mason’s are at least 4 years old and look new. I haven’t gotten mine yet, but I am planning on a pair for next year’s hunting. The winter weights are wind proof, water repellant, breathable, and very warm. Deerskin gives a soft, flexible grip. They do some rather amazing color combos for schooling fun, too…:winkgrin:

Tailored sportsman is the old stand by. Their ladies breeches that are usually sold by retailers are made with large extra fabric seams, so they can be let out or in for altering. Check the label as some can be washed and some are suppose to go to the cleaners. Their leather isn’t as nice as the equessentials. Whatever the leather is, it tends to shrink, tear, and warp if you wash it. Be careful with these. They definitely don’t show dirt, can look quite good. I ride in these for hunting. Generous pockets in the side zips are a favorite thing of mine. I’ve seen the mens made in wool as a custom order. I haven’t checked to see whether they make them for ladies as a custom order.

Search the coth off course forum for the thread on rust breeches. There were more posts and I think more manufacturers. Let us know what you find!

I’m in!

Sending my deposit today! Can’t wait to meet all you COTHer princesses - please bring an extra tiara (and flask) for me!

On a more serious note... I need some warmer riding gloves if the weather down here continues to be colder than normal - hopefully by March spring will be on its way... Anyone have a suggestion that would be appropriate for hunting, but also warm and not too bulky. I have thin black leather show gloves, which I love but aren't warm enough. I also have the tan leather palm, white crochet back gloves, but don't like the bulk and the lack of feel - plus they really aren't that warm.

And what does one wear to a point-to-point? Is it fancy like a polo match or a steeplechase - or can I be warm and cozy in my jeans?

Thanks, ladies, and looking forward to it!!!

 Amy

Plain tan gloves. Go to the feed store and look for tan work gloves. Some have thinsulate.

We will only be out a few hours. You probably won’t get cold.

Okay… what is the typical weather for NVA in March?

Up here where I’m from we will be looking at 30*-50* with knee deep mud which will mix with up to 6" of snow on and off through mid-April.

Yes.

Oh good, then I’ll feel right at home

I’ve also had to switch out coats for a lighter weight, because it was so warm.

March is a crazy month. Though HR’s hunt doesn’t seem to cancel as much as my home hunt - we’re in bottomland. Good hunting, but sometimes mucky and our landowners need to start working on their crops. HR’s club is higher up - her part of the county drains into my part of the county.

Another hunt I subscribe to went out on Saturday, lucky devils. My rig is stuck at the bottom of an icy barn driveway. And my tractor’s front left tire is deader than a doornail. Yay me.

I am very. very. grumpy.

I hate this time of year. :sigh: (whine whine whine whine)

I have a heavy melton hunt coat, but I think, depending on the weather forecast, I’d better dig around for the ancient, thin, black show coat and make sure it still exists so I have some options.

Around here, it doesn’t matter if you are high country or low country. Even on top of the high hills, you can find springs that, if dug into, will bury a tractor up to it’s axels if you linger too long. And mud season can extend into June.

Weather. Yes, We have it.

Va. weather can be anything in March and change rapidly. We don’t really have “Spring”, the soft 50-70F days of perfect riding. It is winter. Boom! Summer. Only way to go is listen to the daily weather and dress in layers for that day. Oh, We DO get major winds, and you do feel them up on the hills/small mountains. They are stronger along the river/stream valleys and the mountain gaps.

My favorite warmer gloves for riding are the SSG winter weight all purpose with the synthetic palms. They wash up well and have great feel for the reins. They don’t change grip if they get sweaty or muddy or if you use them for paddling in a river crossing.

ODH country is uplands grazing old turf over decomposed granite or limestone. It has excellent drainage. The stream crossings will have mud, but more of the hoof to pastern variety. We also have rocks and ground hog holes.

Wow! I just saw this pop up on the main discussions page and all I can say is I am super jealous! I will have to keep following and see if you do another fall clinic. Please post some pics from the weekend. Just so I can dream, where is the closest airport?

Point to Point Dressing

Point to point dressing is like steeplchase dressing, but changes with the weather. For the Warrenton Pt to Pt. (coth hunt weekend), you will still need a hat, but you have latitude in what kind of hat. Something with a brim to keep the sun or rain out of your eyes. Waterproof, if it is soggy and/or windy. Fun but not over the top extravagant. (Not Derby Day) Dress tends towards practical for the weather, with some dashing accents.
For example: scarves, leather skirts, or skirts you can climb a hill in, prettier flat boots or shoes, good pants (cords, twill, wool, khakis, neat and pressed) NO HEELS. Hacking/tweed jackets, sweaters bourbour/aussie raincoats are always safe bets. DuBarry boots or similar style, fun tall rubber boots. Jewelry, belts, especially horsey.

Because the weather isn’t as nice, the come to be seen, not to watch the horses crowd isn’t as …um… active. The horse people come. They may have friends who are racing, know the horses from hunting near them, or have other genuine interest. The moseying along the rail becomes a way to visit with friends while sampling a bit of their tailgate picnic. The people watching is fun and friendly. Conversations are easily struck up. Enjoy!

4matini, the nearest airport is Dulles International, Washington D.C. Dulles is out in Va. about an hour’s drive to Hunter’s Rest. She is near the village of Flint Hill in Rappahannock county. I’m near the village of Orlean in Fauquier co. Old Dominion territory lies in both counties. The Rappahannock river is a large fordable stream dividing the counties.
