Interest in Ladies foxhunting clinic weekend

Ooh, this looks like fun.

Tailored sportsman is the old stand by. Their ladies breeches that are usually sold by retailers are made with large extra fabric seams, so they can be let out or in for altering. Check the label as some can be washed and some are suppose to go to the cleaners. Their leather isn’t as nice as the equessentials. Whatever the leather is, it tends to shrink, tear, and warp if you wash it. Be careful with these. They definitely don’t show dirt, can look quite good.

As far as these? Wash with leather therapy and condition with the leather therapy conditioner, and the patches won’t shrink up, they stay pretty nice. I have some that have worn like iron, even if my roommate does find it a little peculiar to come home to a bathroom full of hanging-dry ugly red and babypuke pants.

I don’t have a heavy melton (although I’m keeping watch for a used one), so I’ll bring the dark show coat and hope for warmth. Is it acceptable to wear a white turtleneck & stock tie instead of a shirt, if it’s cold?
And why can I never conjure up a hot flash when I need one?

Yeah, they sure wash up and condition nice with leather therapy, but then try hunting in them! Those britches will be sliiiiiick.

I washed & conditioned both of my rust pairs and took them on our joint meets down in SC and GA last week. Holy Moly, I won’t ever use that conditioner stuff in the rinse water again. I might dab some on the patches, but that’s it.

what you see isn’t what is

Hinderella,
What makes you think we wear shirts under the outer layer of foxhunting finery?? We get cold too!!! Think creatively… If it doesn’t show on the outside layer, it is fair game.
Mock turtlenecks are like ratcatcher shirts. Just pin the stock tie on with safety pins in the back and sides of the neck, then use the fancy stock pie in the front as usual. Regular turtlenecks can have the turtleneck flipped inside the neck then pinned. I like to use a zip mock turtleneck so I can pin the stock from inside the collar. Then the pins don’t show. Polartec makes some very warm fabric, (power stretch?). I found a heavy weight mockturtle by Marker for skiing that is slippery on the outside and warm velvety on the skin side. It is in black, the horrors! I use a 4 fold stock tie. Can’t tell.

Stock ties can be 4 folds and can be of any material. Polarfleece in white or thereabouts is popular. You can cut it yourself at whatever length you would like. Waterglen does hers extra long, so all those button holes down the front of her jacket are blocked from the wind. She claims it is because the extra length is great for emergency bandages. She is a super nurse, so what would she know about emergencies?! Note: the stock pin needs to be very sharp to go through polarfleece!

For really cold days, I wear an under armor cold gear white turtleneck, a black cashmere sweater, a true 4 fold stock, a pair of long johns, fleece breeches, ski socks, fur lined gloves, toe warmers and hand warmers, canary vest, 20 oz melton coat, ear muffs in black, Mountain Horse boots and carry a little Wild Turkey Honey Liqueur in my flask and a granola bar in my sandwich case.

With this garb on I can stay out for hours in mid 20 degree temps, and amazingly enough I don’t feel like the Michelin Man or a kid in a snow suit. I can still move, but am very comfortably warm.

Important dress issues!

Warrenton point to point attire HAS to include wind proof outer wear. It’s always a windy venue because the viewing area is a north facing hill that’s open. Always cold imho. I suggest Michelin Man Attire!! NON fashionable hat in favor of warm. And remember you are out there standing for 3+ hours too. Good water/mud proof & warm shoes - it’s always muddy there. Muckers/hikers fine. The races tend to go weather be damned as the gently rolling racecourse has good turf which is good for the horses. Last year it rained the whole day. Jeans/warm pants are just the thing. Forget skirts/dresses. JMHO!

Agree any old turtleneck under stock is fine. March is quite variable so it’s hard to generalize how it’ll be. Lean towards temps in 40’s. Bring all the hunting gear you got…THEN you’ll be ready!!!:smiley:

I’m OK with the cold, but I might end up with my black paddock boots and black suede half chaps if I have to do too many layers. Ain’t no way my tall boots would go over anything but plain breeches and socks. I have short Cuddle Duds which pull me through the fall, but the socks become a problem.
Then I switch to the pea-green Warm N’ Tights which aren’t exactly proper. Maybe I should look for some buff ones on sale…

More thoughts

Those of you who are driving to the pt to pt may want to bring folding chairs. Something to sit on can be another creative endevour.

Jawa, are your fleece breeches in rust or some other color?

Pleasantmeadow uses the Back On Track liner socks with ceramic threads. Then she puts another sock over them. I tried a pair and liked them. I forgot the second set of socks, and was ok. I think you have to experiment schooling in them, so you know what combination works at what temperature.

Another thing I use is a “Core” heated vest. They are made for motorcyclists. They are thin, stretchy, have windproof insulation and a thin rechargeable battery. The heated part is in the upper chest and back. I wanted heat in the small of my back, so I wasn’t pleased. But whatever they use for insulation is terrific. Color is only grey. I fold down the parts of the collar and front enough to get the stock tie over them and the stock pinned to fabric not the vest. I don’t want to pierce the wiring by accident. That could be an illuminating experience.

I don’t hunt on frozen ground if I can help it. I hate the thawed grease layer when the top layer of soil liquifies. Hard to stay upright going up and down hills… If I am out and discover I’m going to be traipsing along on it, I stick to the tallest, roughest grasses and vegetation for traction.

All good ideas, thanks. I have a white under armour mock turtleneck, but I haven’t settled the long johns/breeches issue. My warm breeches are not the right color. I have the pea green, like SmartAlex, a deep plum, or black. I’ll probably bring my tall winter Ariats. They’re not true dress boots, but they are black, and I think the Hunt will let me come out with them  And I have my lined deerskin gloves from Cabela’s, so I should be OK with that.

I’ll have to see if I can get my seamstress friend to make me a polar fleece stock tie. Can anyone give me the best dimensions?

I’m really hoping for an early spring, warm, sunny day for all events that weekend. If it is raining, sleeting, snowing, below 35 degrees or some combination of the above, I’ll just stay back at HR with a good book and meet y’all for the parties afterwards! I’ll admit…I’m a big weather weenie!

Whicker, I have tan knee patch, tan full seat, black full seat, grey and pea green extended knee patch breeches that are fleece.

Can you tell I ride in the cold temps alot??? I bought all of them at end of season sales, most for under 30$.

I just ordered a pair of cordless rechargeable insoles. They are on backorder (figures) so haven’t come in yet, but a friend of my husband has some and loves them. I figure they will pay for themselves cause I buy the toe warmer packs and that gets expensive for daily use. I try to buy them at end of season sales, but many times there aren’t any left.

I totally agree about frozen footing. Thank goodness dear pony seems to have 6 legs and a goodly amount of self preservation.

Some brands to consider

I have extensive experience in layering and cold weather riding, actually consider myself a test pilot for many brands since I work in a high end technical outerwear/lifestyle shop.
My number one vote goes to Arctyrex for under jackets and stock ties. Next is Patagonia, which has become my middle name (Mary Patagonia), a pair of capilene bottoms (silky ones)under any three season britches is miraculous. Lastly SMARTWOOL SOCKS. You can leave the batteries at home.

This sounds soooo fun! The only thing I worry about is driving my boy by myself all the way from FL!!! I didn’t notice, but does anyone else happen to be planning on trailering up from the South??

:: pouts :: Yabbut! That totally negates the rimshot :: snert :: joke about holding their manhoods…

HenryV is a powerful play.[/QUOTE]
Henry V is also Malcolm X’s half brother. Trufax.

Now for something completely different from CarrieK, something a bit substantive and really on-topic:

I told my mother about maybe-hopefully-when-pigs-fly “foxhunting in Virginia” with foxhunting meaning hilltopping, of course, and my mother, who is bedridden and is a cowgirl from way back (my first celebrity-meeting was Roy Rogers–Hi there li’l pardner–because my mom was a fangirl) and is the reason we all got into horses, got this look on her face and told me she hoped I would. Then she said I should. Then she said I had to.

So there it is. It’s a done deal now. Mounting block issues be damned.

Bedridden cowgirls have a good handle on what is important in life.

I’ve never put it in the rinse water - ONLY on the patches - because I don’t want to condition the entire pair of pants. But if you dab it onto the patches they stay nice and the breeches aren’t slick, plus you probably use less of the conditioner.

Carrie K,
Give your mom a big hug for me! She knows what her and your souls need. I hope that you read to her our threads on the hunting forum. Maybe you could persuade her to tell some of her stories to share with us.
If we can vicariously give her some of our happiness and giggles, I’ll be very happy.
