Interesting 1880 book on TB (and other horse) breeding in English translation

by the head of the Prussian stud at Graditz, Graf Georg von Lehnsdorff. He talks about what TB mares to choose to breed and also has a section on inbreeding, linebreeding and outcrossing. It’s called “Horse Breeding Recollections” and is well worth reading, as it seems to mirror today’s breeding practices. TbHeritage had an article on the author and practically a rave for his book. I managed to find an online, downloadable copy at the Biodiversity Library here:

It’s also very short, and I was able to read it online without difficulty. Back in the 1880s he believed that the American Thoroughbred was going to be the savior of an increasingly inbred English TB. Turns out that he was right–at least for a time.
