Interesting coloring

Anyone else come across unusual colored TB’s?
This is a color pattern I’ve not seen before.

This is Alidade, a 3yo Tapit filly who is a full sister to Anchor Down and Iron Fist.
I’m assuming she would be considered grey/roan on her papers?

I didn’t find photos of her other side, as her left foreleg looks as if it might be solid bay? If so, guessing chimera. Not sure from just this photo.

Interesting! I wonder if that leg will remain bay as the rest of her eventually goes white. Also interesting that she’s so dark at age 3. The Tapits usually fade in color very quickly. It’s not unusual to see Tapit yearlings at the sales that are already almost white.

We had an unusual colored TB, a filly by Animal Kingdom who was a pinto. Her pictures caused a lot of comment when she was a foal (2017). She had a knee injury as a yearling and didn’t make it to the track, but she’s now eventing Beginner Novice.

I think her near leg is chestnut, since there’s no black sock? I’d also guess some sort of chimera. Super cool!

I knew a Morgan gelding ages ago who was chestnut…except for a black sock. It wasn’t just dark, it was black, with a clear line between his chestnut leg and the black sock. Just on one leg. He was your very typical chestnut everywhere else. It was another cool color thing! (probably also a chimera?)

I’d love to see how they described that on her papers!

I think chimeras are very VERY rare. More likely to be a somatic mutation.

If racing TB papers are still being filled out with the care to color description that they used to have years ago – she’s probably registered “dark bay or brown”. They didn’t seem to care much about color. As one guy told me, “they’re all brown, except the white ones. Some are darker brown than others.” So much easier. If a horse isn’t white, it’s brown. :joy:

She is registered grey/roan. Not enough info to find her description of markings easily.

I saw another one in a sale recently that had similar coloring but it wasn’t a full leg that was brown. I wish I had saved the info

Maybe blood marking or blood spot (not real blood, just a term). https://horsenetwork.com/2017/06/beyond-blazes/

She’s grey with a somatic mutation (part of her body didn’t get the grey message). Can be found on any colour, I’ve seen pictures of bay horses with a black spot, palominos with a big red spot. It’s really quite interesting.
