International Velvet

Has anyone watched the movie? Tatum O’neal plays the title role. At age 14, she went from being a Western rider to learning English for the role, ably coached by William Steinkraus.

The story was hokey as one would expect, but there were some great riding scenes (3-day-eventing). I doubt she did the jumping scenes but appears to have done the flat work.

The fun thing is that, in the end credits, among the “riders” are many British names that I don’t recognize. However! among the U.S. riders were Buck Davidson, Michael Plumb and Tad Coffin. This was released in 1978.

It was some mindless, horsey entertainment for a Sunday afternoon

Love the movie. Sure, there a hundreds of missed details and inconsistencies from National Velvet to International Velvet, but I can overlook them.

There aren’t many movies that focus on 3 day eventing, so I eat them up.

watched it with my Pony Club as a kid.

Watched it as a kid. It converted me to doing eventing. Love Anthony Hopkins in it, I also love watching old Ledyard footage and riders from that era. THAT is the way a cross country course should look!

Have you seen Sylvester?

If not, you should check it out.

The movie The Horse in the Gray Flannel Suit has footage from the real Madison Square Garden horse show. Lots of unidentified big names of the day. The manager of the hunt club where I was riding at the time is in that part taking a spectacular fall.

I love International Velvet. But, Sylvester wins for having the best line ever, “It’s called dressage. It’s like watching cement set.”

It’s pretty cheap to buy/rent on Amazon Prime.

I saw a documentary on making International Velvet that said that Tatum O’Neal did all the riding. They could not “fake” the cross country on a set.

I recall being impressed with her capabilities to ride a bona-fine cross country course…did not know she rode western before taking up “english” riding.

Will try to find the name of the documentary.

Marcia “Mousie” Williams was her trainer. She said Tatum O’Neal was a natural and learned to ride like that in just a few months. She’s in the documentary. It runs on TCM from time to time.

I’m a big fan of Sylvester also.

One of my favorite “bad” movies.

Loved the movie and the horse scenes. It was great seeing the big names.

The kid was annoying at times (the character, not the actress), but if that’s my only real complaint against a movie, I’ve enjoyed it.

Love that movie!

Here is a link to the trailer for the documentary on making the film.

She was actually coached by Marcia “Mousie” Williams. Her is a video of the making of the movie. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=153083yAqzs

My DH gave it to me for Valentine’s Day many years ago… No matter how many times I’ve watched it, I still tear up when the Tatum is given the speech from the coach about how some day, she will indeed ride for Britain in the Olympics.

And all I have to do is mention the movie’s title and DH yells, “The Pie! The Pie!”.

Lord Lonsdale was a former advanced horse that was absolutely a wonderful, tolerant fabulous sweet horse.

I think I watched National Velvet and International Velvet so many times that we went through multiple VHS versions of them. Any time related questions were answered with “you can watch National Velvet 1 time before it’s time to leave”.

When I put the desserts out on holidays I always scream “IT’S THE PIE! IT’S THE PIE” Sometimes I think I’m funny…

It’s the Pie? I only remember her screaming, “It’s the foal! It’s the foal” as she runs out in the field.

The movie is sappy, but it’s very dear to me. My father produced it (much to his dismay; he loathed it) after my mother convinced him to do so.

I have an original script, leather-bound on my coffee table.
