Thanks for the link, very interesting story. One thing you can say about IM is he really stamps most of them. You can see that white face threading thru traffic and know.

I met his Dad, Harlans Holiday, once at River Downs when he was prepping for the Cradle Stakes as a local home grown favorite with somebody I knew in the owner group. Same build, same white face he was a decent stakes winning racer and was the leading sire of 2 yos by money earned his first year in the shed, sired Shangai Bobby and some other notables. Too bad he passed before he really got any traction as a sire.

Thats why they race them and why hope springs eternal the the heart of a breeder…you never know.

Sovereignty (foaled February 22, 2022) is an American Thoroughbred racehorse who won the 2025 Kentucky Derby. Sovereignty. Sire, Into Mischief. Dam, Crowned.

Into Mischief is going to be busy…

I think that white face - with the blaze often travelling down to the muzzle and on the chin, comes from his ancestor, the prolific and hugely influential, Northern Dancer… IM is 5x5 ND, I believe.

Gramps is asking - he heard that every horse in the Derby this year has Secretariat back in the pedigree.
Winner does but I have to leave can’t look up the whole field.

Yup. It’s less impressive when you say, “every horse in the field is a descendant of Secretariat via two mares- Terlingua or Weekend Surprise.”

If you want to talk about freaky breeding success, can we talk about Puca?

2019 foal: Gunning MSP filly
2020 foal: Mage, winner of the 2023 Kentucky Derby
2021 foal: Dornoch, winner of the 2024 Belmont Stakes
2022 foal: Baeza, 3rd in the 2025 Kentucky Derby

You go girl.

Not entirely true: there were several horses with Gone West in their pedigrees (Secrettame) and Burnham Square’s third dam on the bottom is a mare called Listen Well - by Secretariat.

He is in more places in pedigrees than what would appear initially.

I bought in. Even if the filly can’t run, she might have value as a broodmare.

It’s a colt, right?

A filly.

Puca’s current yearling is a colt.

Yup, my bad…

I thought about it but I’m still mad at them for partnering with 1/ST, who has a way of ultimately destroying everything they touch.

I spent quite a few minutes explaining this to husband, including pulling up pedigrees on Equineline to illustrate the point. To his credit, he actually paid close attention and did not appear to be feigning interest.

He was surprised to learn how much influence the mares have.

Puca alone was why Baeza was my Derby pick
