Intranasal strangles in the mouth

Curious observation the other day, and I’m wondering if it was a coincidence. I have 4 horses and all got the strangles vaccine (as well as others). Two of them successfully got it intranasally and the other two were not as cooperative and the vet put it in their mouths.

The ones who got it intranasally were bright and perky 5 hours later, but itching their noses. The ones who got it in the mouth went off of their feed a tad and looked punky.

Everyone is back to normal, but I thought it was really strange and not something I ever noticed before. Is this a thing?
