Irad Ortiz hurt in Gold Cup spill

Got mixed up in an ugly incident at the start, ended up bouncing off the hind end of White Abbario and getting run over. He is alert but my God you should see the head on shot of this wreck.

Sierra Leone got mixed up in it and MIndframe did the half in 45 sans Ortiz. Antiquarian with JV up was the winner.

I just saw this, such a scary moment. Glad all horses are ok and hopefully Irad isn’t seriously injured

That was scary to watch and impacted over half the horses in the field. Irad was alert and complaining of pain in his wrist and ribs. Yeah I’d imagine so, that was quite a fall he took. Glad the horses were all ok and hope he is too.

They are saying he is complaining of ribs and a hand, transported to hospital. The horse that came in so bad and collapsed the field like an accordian was DQd and looks like that jock (KC) might be looking at a chat with the stewards-have to say that was a pretty blatant cut right into other horses right after the break. There is a shot o IR sitting behind White Abbarios jock still holding the reins to Mindframe.

Never saw anything like that and it could have been so much worse. The tv guys had just wrapped a feature on the late Ron Turcoutte (sp?), eerie.

I don’t know how White Abbario’s jockey stayed on, that was super impressive on it’s own that he was able to get his seat back. I feel bad for all of them really, Kendrick I’m sure feels terrible that happened and is regretting that move big time. Poor Mindframe, I bet his connections are pretty upset and now what do you do since it sounds like they were planning on training up to the the Breeders cup after this race. Sierra Leone didn’t get a fair shake, having no choice but to run over Irad. Even Antiquarian and his team, hard to focus on the win with the aftermath of the accident. What a mess all around. Sounds like Irad was transported to the hospital for further evaluation.

Its a Repole horse, just last evening his other horse, Fierceness showed up winning easily at Del Mar, from behind, after a bad start, something he had never been able to do before. The racing gods give and the racing gods take away sometimes within 24 hours.

BTW JV won on Fierceness then flew east to win on Antiquarian in the Gold Cup….you can’t make this stuff up.

This view shows just how close Zayas was to coming off White Abarrio
Pure athleticism saved him from joining Irad in the dirt.
It could have been so much worse.
I’m guessing Kendrick will get days & a fine.
At least he should.

Ouch and then some.

According to this, he may have dodged a bullet.

Ooof, that was ugly. Looks like Ortiz and the horses are all ok.

I wonder what White Abarrio thought of briefly carrying over 200 lbs.

Here is the official chart. I don’t think I have ever seen anything like this.

A quote from Kendrick: “I thought I was clear. I came over a little, but then Dylan (Davis) went more. I don’t think I had anything to do with it.”

Seriously? Dylan’s horse ‘went more’ because you steered your horse horse sharply in his direction. It’s the definition of a chain reaction, that started with you sir.

Holy smoke! That is unbelievable!!!

That is some footnote…wow.

Irad’s athleticism saved him. After seeing the above head on clip in slow mo, no doubt in my mind his reactions to getting bumped off and onto WA created an upright landing then getting knocked down as opposed to a head first face plant and getting trampled. Did they keep him overnight or send him home?

Oh, poor Sierra Leone, a whole year learning to run straight then this. Poor guy.

The overhead shot is insane, thankful he wasn’t hurt worse! Jockeys are amazing athletes.

Wow. That was quite a novel.

Irad will return to the saddle Thursday according to TP just now on the TV.

He’s pretty darn lucky. He should buy a Powerball ticket this week.

He was at the track watching his brother pick up his mounts

They interviewed him, he is hurting a bit and one hand looked swollen but he said he was going to be smart and stay on the ground until Thursday at Ky Downs.

Blockquote
WHITE ABARRIO coaxed from the barrier, got bumped solidly by the shying in CONTRARY THINKING and in turn bumped MINDFRAME solidly, forcing the rider off balance to the right side and losing the left side iron as the rider of MINDFRAME briefly became a second passenger for a stride grabbing on in a reactionary move before dropping to the ground, got steadied as the rider sat back to gain his balance and quickly got the left iron back in place…

Words perhaps never before typed in a post race chart, at least for a G1. Sh*t was CRAZY.

I rewound and rewatched the first 10 seconds of this race maybe a half dozen times before letting the rest of it play out. My husband had been walking by, saw the spill, and came in to watch all of my rewatching with me–both of us were just gobsmacked. Glad the jockeys and horses are (relatively) unscathed; this could have been absolutely catastrophic.

Anyone else here reminded of the 1989 Breeders Cup Sprint? Sam Who finished fourth but was placed last for causing a similar accordioned traffic jam after the break. Poor flashy On The Line was taken out of the race as a result and sustained a leg injury bad enough he was eventually euthanized. Gary Stevens, On The Line’s jockey, claimed foul and the stewards sided with him, taking down Sam Who’s number. Link to the race: https://youtu.be/hsPHlbUTx1s You can see the head-on footage showing the foul starting at 4:15.

That was a similar race where the interference didn’t seem as bad as the Gold Cup, but resulted in catastrophic injury to a horse. We all got very lucky yesterday.
