I was there and you are right…it was terrifying to watch. Mainly because after the rider finally got the horse pulled up-he was dead lame left hind-and she handed him off to someone to keep walking him. I’m thinking-what the hell is going to happen if that panicked horse, obviously in pain-gets away from that guy walking it(he was a little guy and it was a big horse!)-and starts running these people over! It seemed like it took forever for a vet to get there-and being married to a vet (racetrack)-I could not figure out for the life of me-why the hell they kept walking the horse-for like 15 minutes. If the horse has a fracture-it is going to get displaced-and when the other horses were whizzing by-he was getting re-worked up. It did not seem to me that they gave him much tranq. either to calm him down. I don’t know what the hell they were doing and why it took them so long to walk them thru the gap and get him away from all the crowds and horses running past-they thankfully finally took him through the gap and loaded him on the trailer but it took forever and it seemed like they took alot of risks with and obviously panicked-injured horse-JMO.
My thought was that they couldn’t risk forcing him to stand still or he was going to blow up again. I was glad when they dropped the rail and got him on the steeplechase course. I think they had to have screwdriver etc to undo the rail to go through.
We heard a loud pop and saw him leap in the air and bolt. I was shocked she could steer him or keep him in the ropes. I haven’t seen anything like that before. Hopefully whatever happened can be treated.

Was this Fernhill or Portersize? It looks like they both did not complete. The scorecard on the WEG website is almost useless. EventingNation posted about Fernhill who apparently ran away with his rider for a while. I don’t recall much about either horse’s round, if I saw them at all.
It was Fernhill…
irish horse
Scary to watch, indeed, sis and I were just waiting to cross the path behind when the horse bolted. I’ll tell you what, it was a fine piece of horsemanship that she got him stopped, could have been a real trainwreck. She was having a real good round till then, we thought maybe he got stung or something, hoping for an update from somewhere…
I posted a querry on the Irish Field FB site - maybe Siobhan will be able to tell us (she is their reporter there.)
from Horse & Hound:
“Ireland’s Fernhill Clover Mist, ridden by Patricia Ryan, suffered an injury to his left hock while he was galloping between fences. He was transported to the on-site veterinary clinic, where he was medicated and examined before being returned to his own stable. The attending vet expects the horse to continue to improve.”
Thanks weatherford!
It states on Eventing Nation that it is thought that Fernhill stepped on an electrical cable, and pierced the casing with his stud, causing him to suffer an electric shock … could that have been the loud pop? It certainly could have been a reason to bolt out of control …
wow if that’s the case and he got shocked not only is that a scary thing to witness, he’s one lucky horse.
:eek: and it happened at the KHP! I bet that news didn’t make the venue managers too happy.
You’d have to expect the horse to bolt after a shock from being hotwired to a 120v line. I can’t see the video, so I don’t know what happened. They were on course in the galloping lanes where footing preparation is supposed to anticipate hazards like that, I assume? Had something uncovered a buried cable, or was the cable not buried and protected enough?
Ryan was given a DR for the incident, correct? For getting out of control in the first place, or for not getting the horse under control in a “reasonable” amount of time? If it really was caused by that big of a safety fault in venue preparation, is there any chance she can appeal the DR?
Not what happened. His achilles tendon slipped off his leg somehow. He had an Irish groom come into to tend to him over night. I am TOLD that the US physiotherapist for the horses has been able to do wonders with that type of injury. (My info comes from the FEI steward who escorted the groom to his stall in the early hours of the morning.
According to EN, John walked out on the course this morning and found buried cables but they are non-electric.

Hate to hear about a tendon issue, glad it isn’t worse. Thus the underlined If !
No, I can’t really believe the KHP would have unprotected cables across the galloping lanes. Though I’ve seen enough stupidity in my life to not assume anything is impossible, thus my previous questions. Video cables would be low voltage and buried, I take it.
Where does EventingNation get their info, BTW? They also seem to have people on site?
Where (website) is official news best found for horse health at the WEG?
The update is here on the Chroncile site, and it doesn’t sound good. Bill Micklem said it was the same injury that ended Biko’s career. My heart goes out to Patricia, who is a fine rider and horsewoman!

That’s really sad. What would cause an injury like that to happen?
