Is a 3 piece Happy Mouth D ring snaffle a legal bit ?

Anyone know whether a 3 piece Happy Mouth D ring snaffle is a legal bit for US Equestrian? I would call it a French link, but it didn’t really have a shaped piece in the middle, just a small-ish piece.

How about for AQHA?

Went to look at a lovely mare this weekend who has been ridden in that bit at home by owners’ sister. If the horse likes it, I’m happy to go buy the same bit, but if it’s not legal …

If the 3 piece isn’t legal, how about a 2 piece Happy mouth?

What about a regular old 2 piece black rubber D?

THANKS ALL!

For USEF shows: Jointed rubber bits and happy mouths are “legal” as are “3 piece snaffles” if you are talking about something like this:

For USEF hunters, you’re good to go with any of the above. I’m not super up to date with the AQHA rules, though I do know they’re a bit pickier about bits than USEF, so I’ll check the rulebook.

Yessss. My trainer’s favorite bit and we have tons of them on hunters and jumpers.

There’s no dropping the bridle for bit checks in USEF Hunter, Jumper or Eq, long as the sidepieces in the Hunters and Eq meet the described standard, no problemo.
Jumpers, of course, are whatever works.

QHs I don’t know about, don’t recall seeing any bit checks back when I showed but it was awhile back.

Yes, they are legal, just wish Happy Mouths were made from a different material. The plastic, when chewed, can be very, very sharp :frowning:

Dressage

That bit is legal for standard dressage, but not eventing dressage

I also had this same exact issue.

Yes but you can manage it with a little dremel tool. As soon as you feel any sharp points then file them down. Works like a charm to get the longest use out of your happy mouths.
