Is it possible for a racing OTTB not to be in the database?

My mare was roughly 31 years old when she crossed the rainbow bridge and I finely got good pictures of her tattoo, but to no avail still cannot find her in any database.

Hoping I can find her past, so far there have just been multiple dead ends.

OP, so sorry for your loss. She looks so sweet and kind.

Can you describe, in detail, her markings, whorls, etc? You can look up with the JC that way.

Just the RH white, and a star? Any whorls, etc?

Just the white star and the RH cornet marking. I have tried several times with JC in finding her so far no luck or completely wrong horse. Her whorls of what I can clearly remember are the left side of the big part of her star where it ends, a whorl have way on the bottom of her like and when right in the middle of her main alongside her neck. Thank you it’s been almost 3 weeks, and I always feel like I need to go to the barn and see her and then remember she isn’t there anymore.

Yes, usually with older horses you need to email their information to the Jockey Club and they’ll research who it might be.

From the website:

If your horse is older than 25 years of age, please click here, complete all the information on the form and submit to The Jockey Club.

I’m guessing it’s a longshot but do you know her dam’s name?

I have emailed the jockey club and sent pictures and I receive no matches every time.

No it is not possible, if she raced, she is in there. It is possible that she never raced even though she is tattooed but even then she would be in the database like all registered TBs are. I am so sorry for your loss, she was in incredible condition. You did a great job with her.

Is it possible she could have been Appendix? They also get tattooed (as do Standardbreds).

Is there a site where I could look up an appendix tattoo? I was told it was very much a throughbred tattoo.

I think you would need to contact AQHA, but I don’t really know, sorry.

USTA tattoo search brings up a 1989 mare that fits her description to a T. First letter looks iffy but the description is dead on with your photos. Even with the first letter not looking like the result, I’d look further into it. It looks like she has pin-firing scars on her LH fetlock area, no? Firing is more common in the Standardbred industry than thoroughbreds as well. I’d bet this is her.

If it’s her, her name is Arouse.

Good find! OP nice job with your STB!

Did you speak with anyone at the Jockey Club or are you only getting an auto response? I tried looking up an old guy a few years back- he had a crystal clear tattoo, one of the best I’ve ever seen. They searched several times, but could not come up with a match. They apparently lost sections of several years worth of records around the time that the horse would have been registered, so it was likely his info was a part of that loss. They also weren’t as diligent back then with the record keeping- so it could have been a clerical error instead.

Do not futz around with the JC for tattoo research. The TRPB is the agency that keeps the descriptions and does the tattooing. They, at least IMO, do a better job than the JC in searches, simply because that is all that they do.

Holy Moly, this is the most accurate find I have found thus far. I find it interesting that in the search box her tattoo comes up as H18047, but when you click on her name it changes to H1804. But those markings are to a T. You are really good at this. thumbs up

Ok I will give them a go, just to see if they can find her! Thank you!
