As above. They not actually the ‘potato’ family (Solanum; white potatoes are Solanum tuberosum, sweet potatoes are Ipomoea batatas), so I would assume sweet potatoes would be safe to feed in small amounts as treats, and in the Esomeprazole thread they were recommended for ulcers, too.
While I have fed my horses raw (cut up) sweet potatoes with no ill effects, just to be sure, I Googled & got the info that they are a safe treat.
I’m not guaranteeing your horses will agree, but mine are fans.
Yes!
:yes::yes: During WWII, the British fed their horses potatoes. Grain was in short supply, farmers were carrying guns.
As was recounted to me, they at first cooked them, and the sight of horse chomping boiled potatoes will last in their memories. They later found much to their relief, that potatoes could be consumed raw.
So have at it!
Thank you so much folks. I tried them last night and although the picky little New Forest turned her nose up at them, my fewspot really likes them. She is suspected to have ulcers so this is very good news, and of course it made her super happy which is always a bonus!
Mine loves sweet potato chips, never thought about feeding them raw.
They are safe, I used to feed Cavalor and it has sweet potato in it. My horses always did really well on that feed.
