Is panacur powerpak the only way to get small encysted strongyles?

Wondering if there’s an alternative to doing 5 days of dewormer. I use Quest but if I understand correctly it doesn’t get small encysted strongyles?

Moxidectin (Quest) or Fenbendazole (Panacur) will do the job

Quest is great because it knocks the encysted strongyles off. I understand the alternative kills them in situ and then you have more lesions in the gut.

What they said is correct.

Not only does moxidectin paralyze so the EL stages pass on out, as opposed to killing in place and causing the exact same ulcers as if they emerged (a reason some horses act colicky around Day 14 after the start of a Power Pack), moxidectin is more effective.

And, there is a growing resistance of EL stages to fenbendazole thanks to over- and mis-use of it, as well as the huge resistance of the adult strongyles

So, if the horse is old/healthy enough, and in good weight, use Quest Plus in the Spring. If the horse can’t have moxidectin for whatever reason, then the only option is a Power Pack.

Ok thanks! I remember now that if there’s a die off with Powerpak, you need to observe two weeks after the first dose in case of colic. I didn’t realize Quest Plus was adequate for small encysted strongyles, will do that, so much easier. Thx again.
